I know, I know....this question has been asked many times before but I cant find any thread on it. So I just have to make sure. sorry but here is my question. will a 1g head bolt right up to a 2g block? I have a 1g head in my garage. I bought because it was only $60 and the guy told me it will bolt right up. now this other guy said it wont fit without doing some machining. I also search vfaq.com but found nothing. thanks

Okay... to my knowledge it is far easier to put a 2g head on a 1g block because the holes in the 1G heads for the head studs are bigger therefore all you really have to do is machine the 2g head stud holes out a little bigger. Putting a 1g head on a 2g block would mean that the 1g head stud holes in the head would be bigger than they need too. I would imagine this would cause problems. I figure you could machine the block and put the 1g head studs in it. You can be almost positive that there are going to a few sensor issues too.
I am actually going to put my 7 bolt head on a 6 bolt block in the near future. In my opinion, I don't think it would be worth all the work and month to do it the other way though.

I was planning on beefing up the 1g head. So I bought Ferrea valves for it. is there any way to tell 1g head from a 2g head?

Why not just do a 6 bolt swap?

a 1g head fits just perfect on a 2g block, the studs will not effect it at all. You just need other things like a 1g thermostat housing, water pump pipe and you would be better off getting a 1g intake also.
I did this swap and the only thing that did not go smooth was rounding up some of the other parts i needed that i listed, oh a 60mm TB would be better also.

so your saying I dont need to do any machining to the 2g block or the 1g head? so its basicly, its a bolt on head?

I was under that impression too. Since he has done it, I would assume hes right. :p
Do you have a 1g intake mani to go with that? I have a spare and a TB if you want either or let me know.

now not to jack anyones thread but whats the pluses of doing the 1g head on the 2g motor? cuz we have a junk yard around here with about 15 1g turbo motors but no turbos anymore just motors

Correct the head fits just fine, it would just be a problem with a 2g head on a 1g block, but since your doing what i did its perfect. When you buy the HG stay with the 2g so the holes are the same as your studs or your stock bolts ;) You will also need a 1g lower radiator hose. Oh also you can run the 1g cas like i am. I did away with my crank sensor and 2g cas. But i have to physically set timing with a gun now since i have no more crank sensor, but its not big deal.

The biggest thing is that the intake ports are way bigger than the 2g head. So instead of spending big bucks getting your 2g head ported its cheaper just to put a 1g head on ;) Also bigger ports on the 1g intake and a 60mm hole for your 1g TB ;)

Talon69, thanks for all the info. ill have more questions about the whole 1g head in the near future. but I do have a question about the 1g mani...I dont have to run a 1g cas, right? I dont really want to mess with the timing bbecause Iam still learning. setting the timing seems to be a little advanced for me right now. when I get the 1g tb, can I reuse the sensors from the 2g tb?
thanks. Thank you too Thor06

You do not have to run the 1g cas if you do not want to. In your situation of still learning it would be easier if you didnt. Why i say this is because you would have to invert cam signal by changing injector order at the ecu unless you have DSMLINK to do it for you ;) So stay with the 2g sensors.
Now the 1g TB has the same sensors so no need to change them. I went with a non turbo TB just because i did not want the 2g elbow anymore. 1 less leak to worry about, they are known for leaking at the elbow. Oh and the sensors are the same on a non turbo TB also ;)
Glad to help
Eric
EDIT* also stay with your 2g exhaust mani since they have less chances to crack than the 1g's do ;)

2g exhaust manifold also flows better if I remember correctly.

I just noticed something, and i dont think its a good thnig....since i have hard ic pipes, its made to fit the stock 2g tb....what do i do? what if I buy a stock 1g tb elbow on ebay, cut the flanges off both of the pipes (1g tb elbow and my hard pipe) and weld the 1g tb flange back on to my pipe?

1g elbow's are junk!! to small. Your 2g elbow will bolt up just fine to a 1g TB
Just make sure you do not buy a 90 TB, it is different.

I also did this swap(not too long ago when I had my gst). It's not too bad but does require thinking out of the box some. The only maching was when I sent the head out to be polished and etc. Timing was the fun part; getting everything to run right. Don't forget to switch the firing order to.(I forgot what to what, I left the paper that said which with the car when I sold it). Good luck with the swap though.
