The rear axle on my 99 Tahoe is getting noisy so it must be time to look into rebuilding and I would like to replace the open differential with a limited slip/locker( New York snow!). I see references to small and large carrier bearings and the model year break seems to be small up to 98 and large from 99 and later. My experience so far is that the model year breaks tend to follow the pick up trucks more so than the Tahoe. Without taking the differential apart is there any way to confirm which carrier is in my truck. I plan to purchase a used locker and usually the information available from the sellers is limited. This forum has been invaluable for solving issues with me truck. I have been away from Chevrolets for a while so thanks for all the help.

There should be a rear end code on your line sheet.
And some rear ends have a metal tag on them it or have you dealer run the vin no.
Salvage yards should have a interchange book for what will work or not work.
