2000 GMC Jimmy - Tries to change to 4 Low during driving

Hope someone can help me with this issue. While I am driving, the 4WD Low light will sometimes start flashing. I can either hit the 2WD light to turn it off, or let it be and it'll turn off by itself in a minute or so. If I do not notice it and park, the truck will be in 4WD Low when I turn it on and then must get it out of 4 Low so I can drive again. Sometimes this will happen 3 times in 20 minutes, and other times it won't happen for a week. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? If so, how much ballpark would it cost to fix it? I'm not very mechanically inclined.

Does the "4LO" lamp flash while another lamp indicates a different range? If so, there may be a problem with a range sensor or the encoder motor on the transfer case. There is a possibility that the control ot relay center/module (inside the RH footwell kick panel) is at fault, but my gut feel is that a sensor or its connection are at issue. Is the "Service 4WD" lamp also on?

The 4 Low light flashes while the 2WD light remains on. The Service 4WD light came on once a while ago and then maybe once after that. Very rarely. 99% of the time it doesn't come on when the 4 Low light flashes. Any idea on a ballpark cost? Thanks.

Ballpark? Between $75 and $3500. Sorry, but given the range of possibilities from the information provided, that's an approximate range of costs.
On the low end, you could have it scanned to reveal the errors present, and find that it's only a poorly connected sensor. On the high end, the transfer case could have problems requiring overhaul or replacement.
The only way to know is to determine the problem, then start checking repair costs. The additional information is helpful, and the occurrence of the "Service 4WD" warning may indicate control problems rather than serious hardware (transfer case) problems.
You can check the Tech/How-To Articles (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=2069) for hints, and also search the message archives for similar threads and their outcomes. You may be lucky enough to solve the problem by simply disconnecting the battery for a period of time.
