There is highly rumored information on the upcomming STi in the states. Although some info has been released, such as when its comming (estimations), no visual references has been released nor production and hp figures.
Information is known to be leaked out by dealers although thats what I've heard. So many rumors, I really don't give a damn about the STi. :)
Note: All this info is I said are sourced from other places and forums, and as well be plain rumors itself.

I've been asking about the STi for quite a few months. I was told by the Subaru staff at the car show in Atlanta that it was definitely coming next year (2003?). I also have read that some folks have placed deposits on them. I personally went to my dealer just the other day and a salesman there told me that the EPA had nixed the STi and the EVO VII due to emmissions. They were compelled (according to him) to meet the highly stringent California standards rather than the federal standards. He said that Subaru was not accepting deposits for them and that he had a list of 30 guys who wanted to be told the minute that the dealers could take deposits on the cars (I added my name to the list ;) )

Subaru
While Subaru's new Impreza and specifically the WRX have received great reviews, one of the common complaints has been that the headlights were not terribly attractive. For 2003, the European version of the Impreza gets a facelift with revised headlights and tail lights. It has not yet been confirmed when (or if) this change will come to America. Former World Rally Championship (WRC) Tommi Makkinen was in attendance to show off his new WRC car, which also features the new headlight treatment. Horsepower has been increased in both the WRX and STi models for Europe. Again, no confirmation on plans for the American market, however Subaru has said that the more-powerful STi will go on sale in America in the near future.

It could be that the M3 was a faster car, but that does not make the WRX Sti slow!! The M3 is a very powerful car. Anyway, maybe the driver was not so fast. On the race track the driver is as important as the car. A better driver will go faster than a poorer driver even if his car is a lot slower than the other guys car.

como puede ser que un viejo M3 sea mas rapido que un STi? My '02 WRX is quite as fast and maybe faster than the earlier M3. Of course, the driver can make all the difference in the world

No matter if an earlier M3 was faster than a STi somewhere. I still would buy an STi WRX pretty quickly if it became available. Sure the M3 is an awesome car, but it also costs twice what a WRX costs. Even a used M3 of late model would probably cost $40K to $50K:eek:
A new WRX costs around $24K and even the STi will prolly be in the neighborhood of $32K - $36K. Hell, you could own a new STi and modify it heavily and still remain several $K below the price of a used late model M3!
