95 Altima won't start, and dies

I have a 1995 Altima. First, it won't start. I can hear cranking noise, but that's all. It might start once a while if I keep trying. The "engine check" light lit up after the first incident. It's been several days. Today after a hard start, it started and then died on the road. It took about 5 minutes to restart it. Now it's sitting on the parking lot.

Can somebody help me debug? many thanks

Need to have the codes read. Autozone may rent you a scanner.
