I have an 1986 f150 that is having trouble idleing. If I don't put my foot on the accelerator within about 30 seconds it will die. Also the other day I had to hit my brakes harder than usual. This did not allow the transmission to shift gears and It died. As Long as I have it in gear it will usually hold itself at around 400-600 RPMsonce it gets warmed up. This machine has throttle body injection. and a 302 cu in. 3 speed automatic with overdrive. Can any body tell me where to start looking to fix this problem.

Sounds like the same problem that I'm having.
Even after the truck is warm, it still seems to idle too slowly.
See "87 F-150 EFI idles erratically" on this forum.
Maybe we'll get a reply soon.

I changed the EGR valve. No help.
After consulting a ford owner friend, he suggested replacing the Idle Air Control Valve--also called the Idle Bypass valve.
The Haynes manual shows how to test it with an ohm meter.
Eureka. It is fixed.
Part costs about $65.
