Trunk Leak

So I went into the trunk the other day, and I noticed it smelled really bad like mildu, and the carpet was saturated. Alarmed, I pull out the entire carpet in the trunk and I find that where the spare tire sits, there is about 4 inches of water in there. I pumped it out, and dried the entire trunk. I then put my brother inside the trunk with a flashlight and closed the lid. I sprayed water from the hose accross all the seems to try and find the leak. It turned out that the leak came from a vent that was on the bottom right of the trunk, when we looked closer at it, the O-Ring was shot. I went to Chevy to look for that O-Ring, and apparently you cant buy it, you have to get the whole new vent. This caused an even more problem because the vent was wedged between the bumper and the frame. The vent was a whole new design that had a rubber seal without the O-Ring. I replaced it, and it hasn't leaked since... but god what a pain. I wish chevy would put recalls on this stuff... now I have to try and get the stupid smell out because chevy tried to save a few dollars...

anyone else experience anything similar?

1.
You have a very trusting brother.:grinno: (I assume you let him out).

2. Chev trunk gaskets deteriorate. Mine needs repair / replacement in the spring. Any ideas out there on after market sourcing?

thanks
Reg

:bananasmi Sounds like a fun time!

Oh, I forgot to mention, if it helps any, the part from chevy was only $15.. not too bad.. i'm guessing the money is the labor of putting it in, but I did it myself
