Check Engine Light

What are the most common things I should check to see what is causing a check engine light before I bring it into a mechanic to pull codes?

I already checked my gas cap, and oil level.

As well when its cold my coolant light flashes although my coolant isn't low and my engine isnt overheating.

Any ideas?
