Hasegawa Lancia 037 - Yeah I know, Another One!

Well I've been lurking on this list for a while now and posted a few times. I thought I'd take the plunge and post up my work in progress. A little background first. I grew up making models and for one reason or another stopped when I started working on the 1:1 scale stuff in my spare time. Now I still play about in the workshop, but recently returned to this hobby too!
I love Lancias and am currently restoring a Montecarlo, which should hopefully be on the road next year. The next project will then be a Stradale replica (road going version of the 037), but in the meantime I thought I'd build a small version! I can see in the previous posts that this is by no means a rare kit, but then again, with the possible exception of the guy who's building the 8th scale Ferrari from what looks like scrap (jaw-dropping work btw if you're reading!), it's more down to personal interpretation/modification than anything else.
Anyway I'm rambling, so on with the show! I started this kit a little while ago, and recently got it back out again. The quality of the kit is pretty good, apart from the moreorless complete lack of detail under the front cover. Why they chose to have this as removeable and the engine cover fixed is a mystery to me, but there you go!
I'll post some pics of the rear of the car later, but for the time being I'll concentrate on what I've started so far. Please enjoy looking and feel free to post your observations and suggestions - it is all pretty rough work so far, but I do have a thick skin!:grinno:

Not sure if the picture inserted, but it should show the standard kit set up of the front frame.

Here I have rough fitted the anti-roll bar and started to build up the front bulkhead.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Exhaust_3.JPG
This is the modification to the exhaust system, basically drilling out the pipes, altering the mounting brackets and fabricating the strengthening plates on the pipes. And then first coat of primer below.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Exhaust_Manifold_3.JPG
This is my first go at fabricating a new exhaust manifold out of copper wire. I'm reasonably pleased with it, but like the rest of it, it all needs finishing!:grinyes:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Front_Hub_1.JPG
I cut the front hub carriers down a bit, because the standard items were far too bulky. Again a rough cut.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Front_Suspension_5.JPG
This is the first build of the front space frame, including the wishbones. The shocks will be replaced with scratch built items.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Front_Suspension_7.JPG
This is just a shot of the spaceframe removed from the car - obviously!:naughty:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Front_Suspension_9.JPG
This not very clear picture shows the rough hub in place with the front frame on. This really does demonstrate that I also need to improve on my photography skills as well!!
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/3553/428702Rear_Shock_1.JPG
Finally for now - a shot of the rear shocks against the standard kit ones.
Thanks for looking!! For now I am going to concentrate on the front space frame and get that right before moving to the rear of the car.
Watch this space!

Darren,
welcome back to the hobby and going by your work so far it seems you have hardly been away, excellent scratchbuilding and detail work.
Dont feel bad about the model being 'yet another 037', I thought that about my current Stratos build - however Im sure people are going to enjoy this WIP going by the start you've made, look forward to seeing more updates.
Which colour scheme / rally are you going to build the car from? Totip / Martini etc?
Sean

Welcome Darren!
Definately don't woory about the "another 037" thing! Firstly everyone's build is different anyway and secondly I hope to be boring you all with mine sometime soon also  (although seeing your and SeanyG's threads I might chicken out)
I really appreciate the work you are doing on the exhaust.
The coil on the rear dampers looks a bit wonky at the moment though ;)

Sean,
Thanks for the comments - mucho appreciated, especially bearing in mind your current work, and you will no doubt see some of your techniques in my build. Fantastic work mate!
Got a lot of ideas of what I want to do, but we'll have to see how far I go with it. Got a stratos in my to do pile - along with a lot of other stuff!!
As far as colur schemes are concerned - its got to be Martini - they just suit the car completely. In fact I would go so far as to say I would paint the Stradale as and when I build it in the same colours!;o))
Next update to follow shortly! Just need to get back up in the loft!:grinyes:

Klutz_100 - great name btw!;o)
Thanks for the comments - Had to do the Lancia thing - one of my very favourite marques of car! I want to have a go at the 1/12 scale Stratos kit, but I need to find one first!
Hopefully the system will work once its together - the tail pipes and silencer box were crying out for a little bit of work! Still not sure if I'm going to with squeaky clean out of the factory finish or go for more of a 'weathered' look yet.
Darren
p.s - edited as forgot to mention the rear spring - you're absolutely right! Will have to redo that one methinks! Going to be doing the same on the fronts too!
