Smoked Speedo Head!

well,the shop i am having a engine done at,hooked up juice to the car today-POOF!!wires at speedometer fried & not sure how far back this goes.anyone have any ideas as to what might've started this?car ran before pulling out engine and another shop says that maybe a wire in a harness could be pinched.could a bad starter have caused this?:frown:
