Posi Traction?

I've been thinking about putting a Posi rear end in my car for a while now but i've run into a problem. This car is my daily driver and because i live in canada (Where it snows half of the year) I need a car that can handle bad weather. I was wondering if it was possible to get a rear end that could be easily switched from Posi to regular? If not, is there a system that only engages both wheels when you punch it? Any Ideas on this problem would be most appreciated.

hmmm it seems to me... having positraction would help you in the bad weather.
having both wheels working would theoreticaly help keep you going straight. it would just take throttle control. Cause if you have a Peg leg, and romp on it the ass end would kick out. Having both working, you should be able to keep control.
But the obvious answer to bad weather for a daily driver is AWD.
Hope you stick with the Monte though, RWD can be giggles of fun.
Good Luck :)

My impresion was that posi is the worst thing for bad wheather because you fishtail.

well, i dont live in the part of the country to where it gets snowy, and small children freeze to the road... so i wouldnt know about that sorta thing.
but it just seems logical to have more wheels moving for traction, true you could fishtail, but then again common sense should kick in like Vtec and tell you not to mash out in bad conditions.... at least i'd hope it would.

While posi is great for straight line traction, it actually hampers a car in the corner, because it wants the wheels moving at about the same speed... an open differential is smoother in bad weather.
The answer of course? Get a cheap LS diff! You can get one in a junkyard from a Corvette or something probably.

This is the sort of thing you need. This is for a front axle, but you get the picture...

So you mean you can get a limited slip diff that can be switched on and off? I never heard of anything like that (forgive me I'm 17 and a dumbass, LOL). Redneck: your a lucky guy living without snow, up here where i live I'm lucky to survive winter with RWD but it's a risk I'm willing to take. I've been looking at the 350 buildup you posted for me earlier. I was wondering if i'd be asking for trouble if I used a block with a 2 bolt main instead of 4?

Ah...? I posted a build up for you?...
hahah i cant recall, i've posted a buncha motor ideas... Refresh my memory!
Anywho, yeah 2 bolt will hold up under the pressures of hard driving but you start to run into problems when you get into the 400+ hp and 400+ ft-lbs area... thats why most people opt to find a 4bolt block so you can go with relative comfort knowing that you probably wont break stuff.
Keep me posted!... or Personal Messege me for more info... i'll help you with all i can.

Limited slip(posi) will help in both high and limited traction conditions.Cornering and straight line will be better and more predictable.Posi is not the same as a locker or welded diff.Go for it!

Umm, posi is a kind of locker, not a true LSD. It all depends how much you want to spend. You could probably find a LSD, a Torsen would be best. A new one should run you something $1000, and a used one $500.
