Heater fan kills my engine?!

No idea what's going on, but here's what happened:
Friday, left town on a road trip, got about 40 miles down the road, and the alternator belt just fried... Squealed like a pig and smoked like a chimney, but it was like the belt was stuck, and the crank pulley just burned right through it.
Found a Napa in hicksville (thankfully), got another belt and threw it on in the parking lot. After that, I noticed that every time I kicked on the fan for the heat, it would kill the engine... There was another belt that I had to remove in order to get the alt belt back on, and had assumed that I may have over tightened it... I have no idea what this belt is driving... a little device above the alternator which looks like some sort of pump. So, I loosened said belt, but the problem persists, but only when the car has warmed up a bit.
So, the alt belt is not only driving the alternator, it's driving something else (which I assume to be the AC compressor... I don't have a manual for this car).
Anyways, does anyone know what these other parts are? I'm positive that one is the AC compressor, but not sure which. Also, does anyone know if either of those other parts would cause the engine to die if the heat fan was kicked on?
This is my girlfriends car, so I'm not 100% positive on year and trim level, but I'm pretty sure it's a 95 accord, 2-door, with A/C, pwr windows...
Any help would be appreciated!

You said it is with the heat on.Are you sure it is not on defrost.With defrost it also engages the a/c.If that is the case ,It sounds like the a/c compressor is locked up.Try turning on the a/c to see if it causes the squelling.

Yeah, sounds very probable, and that could explain the initial problem, btw. On idle it kills the engine, when car is moving - it can't stop the engine and kills the belt... And you don't need a defrost - and it is probably has not been linked yet back in 95. If you said you were kicking the fan - turning it on from zero position, yes? - and your a/c was turned on, a/c did not work on zero fan, and just started when you truned the fan knob...

I will have to check that out... thought that defrost was the same as heat, just re-directed towards the windshield... I'm sure we were running the defrost because it was very cold out and the windshield was fogging up.
However, for the rest of the trip, we did use the defrost settings, just without the fan. There was enough hot air coming through the vents without the fan to get the job done... Does that still jive with the A/C compressor locking up theory?

Yes, it makes a perfect sence. To have a/c on you have to have two things:
1. Have a/c button on and/or climate dial on defrost;
2. Fan on
If you have fan off, a/c will be off, too.
