Oil Change Woes...

After some white smoke on startup and some research on the forum I decided to change my oil to 5w40 castrol synthetic. At 6 bucks a quart I wasn't excited, but rather spend money on oil than parts. Normally my wife takes her 98 Passat 1.8 20valve turbo to the local oil change shop. This time I did the change myself. I do most of the maintenance on my Isuzu Rodeo, but the Passat is bit out of my league, but I figured I could handle an oil change. After parking on a level surface I drained the oil, changed the filter out, put the oil plug back in added 4 quarts or 24$ of oil, which ever way you look at it, and started the car. I let it run for about a min, so that the oil would fill into the filter for a proper level test after a 10 min cool down. I checked the oil and.....I am at least 2 quarts over MAX!! What the &$(#)#%^@???? So i inspected the dipstick, it is missing part of the plastic where it meets the metal. Can some one give me an accurate measurement of the plastic portion of the dip stick? If so, I can see if that is part of my problem.

I decided to take the car just around the block to see if that would make any difference. And ran in to problem number two. When leaving a dead stop the engine revs and finally slips hard into gear. This is a problem we have had before and plan to have our reliable European mechanic take care of. I just found it very odd that it happened on the very first time driving it after the oil change I performed. Could I have actually touched something to anger it? I am never touching this car again. I put a new fuel pump in my Rodeo over the weekend and didn't have a single snafoo, but if I even touch the oil on the VW it screams with pain.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We will be dropping the car off at the VW mechanic tomorrow after work, I like to go in armed with any good suggestions. So fire away! Thanks.

I read before that perhaps you draine oil from the transmission. When I change oil, I use 5w-30 synthetic oil and it goes for 5,000-10,000mi/change. It's not expensive because the viscosity stays for long time. It takes 4.4L of oil for oil change and oil level is a little high.

When transmission slaps hard into gear, it is a good possibility that oil is missing.

As for plastic part, it does break ocasionally, go to the vw dealer $5 part.

sounds like you drained the transmission oil. To drain the engine oil its a 19mm plug and you need to remove the bellypan. The transmission on the other hand is a 17mm allen socket.
