I have been using regular unleaded gas in my 97 Lesabre and I have been having problems. Today my engine check light came on steady. I recently changed out my fuel pump. (two weeks ago). I pulled codes at auto zone they told me it might be a bad gas cap, bad gas or a exhuast leak. I have new pipes from the Cat back. I think it might be the gas . Any more guesses ?thanks

Post the exact codes. Also, is the motor supercharged? Have you been buying name-brand gas? When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter (only last 12k miles)?
I doubt it is bad gas unless you either buy from the same station all the time (and they have low quality fuel) or its more than a year old.

It was code 422 i think it was gas or exhaust related I have had to car for 5 months so i dont know when the fuel filter was last replaced. i was told to run that tank out and the light may go out. I was thinking about upgrading my fuel. I do go to the same gas station. I am going to buy a new gas cap to see if that helps Not a super charged engine

Get the exact code and post back, without it how is anyone going to give meaningful advice.

On a NA motor, you won't need to run anything more than 87 octane. Thats what the motor was designed for so running higher octane fuel won't do anything.
I assume you've changed the gas cap by now (and I've heard of wierd things happening to old gas caps...), but I think you should go ahead and replace the fuel filter. This is a commonly ignored part so it probably needs a new one anyway.
Get the code though...

On the gas caps, you can look for the rubber seal that mates to the top of the gas filler. I've lubed those with vaseline and improved the seal. I also rubbed the vaseline on the filler and smoothed out a roughness that had developed making it hard for the cap to seal. It turned off the SES light. The car runs the vacuum check on the system when the motor is between two temps and is restarted. It doesn't run the check when restarted at full temperature.
Since you recently changed the fuel pump, it could be related to the hoses around the tank where they have been connected to the pump and run along the tank--a hole or a disconnect on the vapor lines.

Small leak in the evap system, cap was done, look at the filler pipe hoses, purge hoses, anything in the system that would allow any small vacuum/pressure loss. Sometimes a shop is required here and the use of a smoke machine.
