'95 9C1 Transmission

My Caprice's transmission shifts really late and really hard out of first gear, but the rest of the shifts are fine and reverse works, too. I think the other gears may be getting worse and I have no idea what could be wrong.
Also, it seems as if there is no cover over my flywheel, or flexplate, and it looks like grease is getting everywhere. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I'd greatly appreciate help.

How's the condition of the fluid?
It's possible that the spool valve in the governor is sticking, try removing the governor and giving it a good spray down with brake cleaner. The valve should move freely.

About how much would that be at a transmission shop? I'm not sure how the fluid is and I can't check the car for another 2 weeks but I'm guessing it's alright since the car has only 41,200 miles on it.

That's your first mistake. If it is a 9C1, there's a chance that it may well have been abused and it's not in great shape. By checking condition of the fluid, what I mean is color/smell/etc. The fluid should be a orange-red to bright red color, and it should be clear. Murkiness to the fluid can be an indication of slippage (the cloudiness would actually be clutch material in suspension). Brown, black or strong-smelling fluid indicates an overheated/overheating condition within the transmission - either converter (torque converter clutch) or slippage.
Anything in suspension in the fluid can cause valves in the transmission to stick. Have it serviced.

If the fluid is coming from the area of the torque converter and not from above it (such as coming from top of engine), and that fluid is engine oil, then you might have a leaking rear seal on the engine. If it's coming from the top, it could be a leaky oil sender or a gasket on the intake or distributor, or even the valve covers (although the centerbolt covers on the '87-up SBC engines don't tend to leak so much). If it's transmission fluid, and it's coming from behind the torque converter, then it could be a leaky front seal or front pump O-ring.
Edit, nevermind it's a '95 - you won't have a leaky distributor.
