where is the temp gauge sensor located on the 4.0L? I know it is suppose to be on the back of the engine, but its kind of hard to see back there.

On my '88, it's located on the rear of the engine to the right of the valve cover. It takes a deep 13mm socket to remove.

Top rear, behind the TB. Has a one-wire connector on it, brass in appearance.

What year? On late models, it is on the thermostat housing in front (top rad hose).

its a 96.... I have one on the thermostat housing, but I also have a wire for one on the backside of the engine, I just can't find where it connects. And I know that wire is for the gauge because I ground it, and my gauge topped out. The gauge hasn't worked since I bought the jeep 6 months ago. And the other day I found the wire while messing around in the engine bay.

I do not have a specific for the 96 in my own stock...but the FSM says it is now at the t-stat housing one....for the 00 which the FSM I am using. Apparently, they were merged into one according to the text. The old was in the back left..

Try this:

I could really use some help here.......

Is it in view from on top of the engine? Is it located on the head?

My heater felt hotter then usual today and I still don't have a temp guage..... I really need to fix this.

EDIT: I found out that the engine on my jeep may be from a newer jeep. Whenever I buy parts I usually have to buy parts from a 97, like injectors, TPS and such. So AlohaBra said that they incorperated the one on T-stat housing to run both the guage and the engine controls....... And since I can not find the sensor on the engine any where, I must a engine from a newer model..... So my question is, how can I make my guage work with this?

Also its a Violet/Yellow wire, and I'm not finding it on the schematics.....

this would be so much easier if someone would just take a picture of where the sensor is so I can conform that I have one or not.

My XJ is a 97 Sport and I am the original owner.

The gage sensor is on the thermostat housing. You can take it out and wire brush the sensor and the threads for better contact. Change the theromstat housing gasket and thermostat while you are at it.

Mine was starting to leak about two weeks ago. The gasket was 10 years old and is made of paper. Replaced the t-stat also and it actually runs a little cooler (stock spec t-stat). Did the wire brush thing and all is good. BTW, it is a copper looking thingy.
