Anyone Know the Oil Plug Torque Spec

I just changed the oil in my daughter's '06 LT Auto Hatchback but I couldn't find the torque spec for the drain plug in the owner's manual. Does anyone know it?

I've looked at the Chevy site and saw the $140 service manual, but I certainly don't want to spend that much. Next time I'm in the local auto parts store I'll see if Haynes or Chilton's has a manual for the '06 yet.

The oil pan drain plug bolt torque spec is 40 lb ft

The oil filter torque spec is 10 lb ft

The above specs are for a 2007 Aveo5 SVM but they should be good for your car as all Aveos have the same engine. The specs are from the GM Service web site. My dealer was kind enough to print out for me the "Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement" web page.

Wow, 40 ft-lb is the most I've ever heard of for a drain plug. I think on most other vehicles I know, it's 15 ft-lb or less. Well, I put it on pretty tight but I can check the torque now and see where I am. I've never seen a torque spec on a filter before; that's pretty nice to have.

Thanks for the info. My daughter's Aveo has the extended warranty on it so the only things I'll be doing are some of the easier scheduled maintenance jobs; that's why I hesitate to get a service manual for it and why I appreciate these car forums so much.

Yeah, 40 ft lbs is pretty steep for an oil pan drain plug. However, that is what the Chevrolet service site for dealers says. Generally, steel pans have much higher torque specs than aluminum ones. My previous car was a 1987 Saab and the torque spec for the oil pan drain plug was 21 ft lbs.

I have a 2007 Aveo5 SVM which I picked up on 10/31 and I will be doing my first oil change on it towards the end of January. FYI, the dealer recommends changing the copper washer for the drain plug with every oil change. I don't know if that is necessary but I bought a pack of ten just in case.

I am really happy with the car. It's fun to drive and suits my needs exactly.
