Missing Spring

I recently puchased a window reg. assy. for a 1992 Grand Am. The old regulator has a tension spring on the reg. but the brand new one from GM does not. Is that spring required? It has pleanty of tension so removing it looks to be difficult. Any help will be appreciated.:banghead:

I would think the GM one you purchased should be assembled and ready to install.
