96 Accent HELP!!

I have a 96 accent with SOHC and there has been a knocking sound comming from the engine. It sounded like a valve to me so i ripped it apart and didn't get a real chance to look at it when i had to leave. So i go to start it up and the valves went knocking like crazy then you could smell gas really bad. Then it quit. So i got it running good enough to get it home. But it now runs really bad. I think the timming may also be messed up. Now the check engine light is on.

What do you guys think i should do and what do you think the problems are???
