Question: Decal replacement

I've been going over my older models recently and now I am not so happy with the paint jobs that I did, anymore. I used a Fujimi Porsche 911 turbo as a test case for disassembly, new paint job and re-assembly. It came out nice, not perfect but better than before. I also had spare decals for it.

Now comes my question: If I want to repaint some of my other models (for which I do not have spare decals), how can I replace the decals?


Is there a way to save the existing decals from the model and then reapply it? I did not use decal setting solution in the "old" days, and no clear coat.
Is there a way to purchase replacement decals? These are street models, mostly Fujimi Enthusiast Series and Real Sports Car series. Most are long out of production.Right now I am not confident to make my own (oh so very small) decals with an ink jet printer - so far I only had success with larger designs.

First try soaking the decals is warm water, it takes a while on old models but most of the time they come off. Gently, move the model a bit in the water (only once or twice per hour) to see if the decaled has loosened. DON'T TOUCH THE DECAL!!! If the decal has not completely seperated and you touch it directly, there is a good chance you will tear/destroy it. If you get it off successfully, place it on some old decal backing or the backing for stickers. I personally have around a 70% chance of getting the decal off safely, that is, if I am patient.
One thing that I just thought of is, normally the decals will loosen up in order of size, smaller=faster. So, if you have a model with a whole lot of decals, you will have to check up on it more often. Wet decals seem to have the habit of sticking to each other when in water...and are a PITA to get seperate without damaging them.

As for replacements I'd try contacting your local Fujimi dealer and ask if they can get replacements for you, if not, then try the car model classified thread.
