Whining noise

My 97 Silverado, 5.7L, has a whining noise that seems to be coming from under the truck, just behind the cab. I am guessing that it is the fuel pump?? Is there any wait to tell other than removing the pump? I have read that I have to remove the bed to get to the fuel pump.

Some whining was considered normal for some of these fuel pumps? Pulling the bed is the easiest way (my opinion only) to access the pump.

Yeah; a little whine is normal. But a loud one is an issue. When your truck is running; take the fuel cap off and see if the whine is louder through the filler neck.

I have dropped the tank; and lifted the bed. If you can get a couple guys over; life the bed. 6 bolt; two ground wires; and a wire harness and your done!

Dropping the tank is a beast in it self. =)

I have done it twice and found it easier to lift the bed rather than to remove it.

when u turn the key to run (not start), u should hear the pump start up.
they are loud. Mine competes with my exhaust. You can have the pressure checked if you're that concerned. Keep your tank 1/4 full for cooling of the
pump. Search this forum & you'll get more info than u want

i have replaced a couple of these before and i would say if the truck is running fine (it starts fine, runs/accelerates fine.) leave it alone. let it whine untill the the truck hard starts. if you really must replace it , get it through gmpartsdirect . research prices and youll find out why
good luck
