Help No Brakes!!!!!

ok, my brakes just gave out today..... i noticed that the fluid was leaking from the right drum, i took off the drum, alot of fluid and shit was inside of it.....and i cant figure out where the hell it is leaking from! ill i know is that it is leaking from somewhere inside the drum.. has anyone ever had this problem before? if so what do i need to replace? and how much should i expect to pay for it?

i think it is coming from the only clean thing in the picture (i cleaned it for it to stand out, because i dont know what it is called) and no it is not coming from the break line outside of the drum, it is in fact coming from inside the drum itself...just dont know where from, like i said i think it is coming from the shiney thing in the pic (once again, dont know what its called) anyone know what it is called and what its use is? also how much would it cost to replace?

I don't think its coming from inside the drum. Try checking your rear brake lines and u'll see the bolt at the end. See if its leaking from there and if it is you might wanna tightened it back up.

If its damaged then I smell a Rear Disc Swap in your future.

its probably your rear brake cylinder in the back. its a small cylinder looking thing that pushes teh drums out when you brake. it has a rubber surround that tend to get worn out and crack and leak after a while. more than likely its that cause your car is old and if you dont remember replacing it then its been a while. i think they sell rebuild kits but i would just spring for a new one. they are not that expensive, at most like $30. i would also suggest replacing the ohter side as well. i am 90% positive its the rear brake cylinder

or it could be that your brake line itslef came loose

try maybe the wheel cylinder, or the line that bolts into it.

hey, i was wondering if i could clamp or plug that brake line so that the other brakes would work? i have to be able to drive my car ASAP would doing this mess anything up?

also, could someoe scan or copy the pages out of there helms/chiltons/ect that says how to get the wheel cylinder off? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i had to change the wheel cylinder on my dads camaro, and it took me only like an hour to do one side.

yeah you can plug the hole but idk if you can find anything that you can use to plug it and that will withstand the pressure the brake lines put out.

you might need to take apart the brakes, idk i forget. i dont see any pics up there

i dont see any pics either, about taking the cylinder off its simple just look at it u can see how it comes off but rember to bench bleed it first.

If you could find the correct size you could get a capped nut to screw over the hardline.

Yep, wheel cylinder. You'll want to do the other side too. Flush out the whole system front and back when you bleed it. You will need new brake shoes as the hosing down they got from the fluid will have ruined them. If you haven't done drum brakes before I wouldn't reccomend it without having someone that's done it before there to supervise. They can be quite the rubics cube. Do one side at a time so you know what it's supposed to look like when reaasembled.

The most common cause of cylinder failure is cruddy brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs water and that causes corrosion which wrecks the seals. Your brake hydraulics will last almost forever if you flush the system every couple of years.

even if you put like a cap on it i think it will still leak unless there a rubber washer in there. yeah darolh is right, if you never done drums before, either have someone there who konws how to and has the right tools to do it. right tools for the right job,lol. and if this is your first time then i would suggest buying extra brake fluid. and if your gonna bleed teh who brake system, just remember, longest to shortest

I agree..... if u've never done drums have them done elsewhere.
Discs r easy drums can b confusing sometimes. I did mine a couple weeks ago, they're a pain 2 do if u don't take off the hub & they're different than most cause the self-adjuster is at the top behind springs.

As far as bleeding goes on our cars it's not longest to shortest..... Our systems r cross connected so u have to bleed diagonally.

Buy a manual & u really shouldn't have a problem if u have the patience.
