check the wires in the door harness sometimes they brake inside the rubber boot that is supposed to protect them. With the age of the car that would be the most likely. Also you said you checked the switches did you try swaping them with one of the other window swithes they are all the same. I have seen them get sticky from lack of use

I have a 92' 318, and I had the same problem with the front passenger window...only mine would go down and not up!
Some times it would work, other times it wouldn't, so we concluded that there was a short in it. We pulled out the entire console and checked the wires...they were fine. We tried opening and closing the door to see if there was a short in the connection, and sometimes this worked, and the window would go up. One time, I got so frustrated that hit the console really hard, and then the window went up!
I took it in to my mechanic, and he told me this was a chronic problem with the older 3 series, and he went over the wiring to make sure everything was in order, and it's worked ever since.
If you have someone who can go over it, that's the best thing to do, cause they'll be sure to catch any problems there might be by simply tracing the wiring.

Hi, I also have the same problem with a '92 318is. I've had a quick look but as it's winter ( in Canada)the problem is not urgent. Sometimes it works and some times it doesn't. When it works the window drops and lifts when opening and closing the door ( as it should). When it doesn't work, nothing works but I can hear a relay clicking inside the door. Does any one know what activites the lowering of the window when the door is opened?? Could it be the courtesy light switch?? Where is this switch anyway?

I'm pretty sure that the problem is with your Window Regulator...
