Radio Display - dimming then comes back, then repeats.

Hi Folks! Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I've recently noticed my radio display (OEM cassette) is dimming, and then returning to normal, and it happens like a slow flicker - about once a second, maybe longer on some intervals. It's also not always happening - but it's very consistant usually.

Do you think it's a sign of an electrical issue or is the stereo display just breaking down?

TIA!

Solster - when my trailer wiring connection first started to indicate a bad ground, the radio display was the 'chosen' communicator. This occurred even when there was no trailer being pulled. I blamed the radio at first since I had removed a broken aftermarket CD player and re-installed the original cassette player in the past. Eventually most of the dashboard light array went nuts, and thanks to the folks on this board I zero'ed in on the problem and a new hoppy brand 'T' connector under the rear bumper solved the problem.
Maybe you have a different issue that is surfacing, but I thought I'd mention it. Tom

I wouldn't think your stereo would be fading out on it's own - still have my OEM cassette that lights up as well. Could be a loose light bulb - I've had a few of those behind the gauges.

Agree with Highlandlake too, disconnect your trailer wiring harness and see if things improve. Also, check to see if any other lights are out inside/outside the truck.

I don't have a trailer package. Does that rule out this issue, or does a trailer harness exist even though I don't have a trailer package? thanks everyone!

Yes, it does rule it out if you don't have a trailer wire harness hooked into your factory wiring.

One more thing I'm thinking of, as I'm working on my own foglights today; don't know if the '99's are the same, but on the left side of my steering wheel down by the knee area, I have this knob that turns the brightness of the lights on the dash up or down. Wonder if you have the same thing, and are any other dash lights goofy?

good thought - but didn't solve the prob. Yes, the 2nd gen has the dash dim light knob to the right of the wheel - but it wasn't the issue - and I had my hopes up :cwm27:

I checked, all lights on the dash are running normally - except the stereo display - the prob is isolated to the radio display. Might this suggest a non-electrical issue - that's it's the radio unit.

THX!

Solster, I have the same issue on a 00 Honda Passport 3.2l V6 OEM radio. Did you find a solution? Did you have to replace the lights? If so, what did they take and was it fairly easy to do? The Lights on both the display and to the left where the six selection tabs are located are out, however the cassette light still functions.
Thanks,
KC

My 2000 rodeo did this last night. I went to start it and the battery was dead. I got a jump and it did this all the way home. I left it charging overnight and all day today so perhaps it'll be gone with a charged battery, or perhaps whatever is causing the blinking also caused my dead batt. and it'll come back again. If anyone knows the solution to this please post it.

I can't say for sure, but 3 years later, and I can't recall this problem happening again - I didn't do anything as a fix, and for all I know, it's still doing it, but I doubt I wouldn't notice, my guess - a temp glitch

Oh well..... that's a easy fix :D
