I'm Building a 6 bolt 4G64 for the Spyder. Some questions.

Anyway I haven't been on here as regular as usual. I've been busy. In the past few months I have changed a few things on the Spyder and I have also acquired a new project car. I don't really want to go into all the details right now until I can do a proper update ( I lost my camera so I cant take any pictures). Anyways, I have a nice, complete, and running 1992 6 bolt 4g64 engine. I have already disasembled the engine completely and done the balance shaft elimination. I just need some opinions on what to fill the block with. Here is the things I know I am going to do:

-Hone the block
-Clevite bearings
-ARP head studs, and main studs
-Keep the factory 100mm crank
-Swap the stock 8v SOHC head for my 16v SOHC head w/ AEM cam gear
-Do light head work
-Copper head gasket

Now I need some help deciding on the rest of the things to use. My plans for this motor is to be turbo and make around 350 streetable horsepower but be able to handle atleast 400 horses. I'm also on a semi-budget so I want the best bang for my buck.

Heres my questions:
If I am not mistaken the cylinder bore on this motor is 86mm. Now I know JE, Wiseco, and Ross all make good pistons for this motor and they cost around 400-450 bucks. My question is can I get factory 4g63t pistons in 86mm. I doubt it though, so I will probably be stuck with getting the forged pistons mentioned above. But if I can get 4g63t pistons in this size will factory pistons be able to handle this power?

Eagle makes a good set of forged h-beam rods for my motor, but again they are pricey. Does anyone know of any other good forged rods I can use (rods from a 6 bolt 4g63t motor will work). Will factory 4g63t 6 bolt rods handle this power?

I think thats all I need to know, just the pistons and rods. If I come up with any other questions I will be sure to post them. So if anyone can give me some info on the things mentioned or just any other thing I need to know, that would be great.
thanks

IMHO, you're trying to mix too many motors all in one. If I'm not mistaken, you want to use a 92 4g64? block and crank with your SOHC head and some 4g63 pistons? Factory 6 bolt 4g63 rods and pistons will handle upwards of 500hp, so you should have no problems there, but are you sure the fitment may be exact with the rods considering you CAN fit the pistons in your motor? I have a feeling there will be much machining needed to be done to fit them correctly. I'll do a little more searching later on, I'm not in the mood now.

And while you've gotten it torn apart, why don't you use a DOHC head instead of your SOHC? That's what I would do. Sure it's a little more money and work, but you could always sell your head to cover some of the costs. It just doesn't make sense to me to stuff all these different components together and run just a SOHC head. :2cents:

DOHC would be nice. But I kinda like to stray from the herd a little, thats why I'm running a 6 bolt 4g64 instead of a 4g63, and a SOHC head instead of a DOHC. About the rods: I have been confirmed that 4g63t rods will work in this motor, I was warned that I may have slight clearancing problems because of the angle placed on the rods from the 100mm stroke. I'm just undecided as to whether I should run factory 4g63t rods in the motor or to run 4g64 forged Eagle rods.

About the pistons. Wiseco, Ross, and JE make forged pistons specifically for the 4g64 which would be ideal. I just want to know if I could get some oversized 86mm 4g63t pistons for cheaper since you informed me that they hold up so well gthompson. I'm pretty sure that 4g63t pistons would work if I decide to go that route, if not I will just drop the dough for the Wisecos. I don't want to spend a bunch of money in something if I can get something else that works just as well for cheaper.

About the machining. The block shouldnt really need any machining but if it does I can get anything I need done to it for free at school so thats no problem.

I'm very excited about this build and if I find my camera I will take lots of pics to show you guys.

1. You will not be able to use rods from a 4g63 on that motor. Atleast not the stockers. I'm not 100% sure, but because of your crank being different than that of a 4g63, you won't be able to use the same rods.(Edit) Reading your last post it say that you can run stock rods on this motor. I don't really know if I would advise that. I just can't see stock 4g63 rods with that crank having the clearance needed to run properly. Why else would you need to change the rods on a 4g63 2.3 stroker build? Same crank, basicly the same block.

2. You do know that a 4g64 is the same thing as a 4g63 with a different bore?

3. Why would you want to use a SOHC head and starve your motor of all that extra air and power, I know you want to do things differently, but really IMO this is a huge mistake.

4. 4g63 stock pistons would work if you could find them in the 86mm bore. They will support up to 500 ponies as said above.

Also I'm interested in what car your motor came out of? What was the 4g64 in, in 92? Like a van or something?

The deck heights are different also. 4g64s were in hundais*

Ahh yes, I always forget about those cars ;)

sounds exciting! GOOD LUCK with your motor build Vanilla

Well, I guess if I can find some 4g63t pistons in 86mm then I will get those and probably factory 4g63t rods also.

Yes I do know that the 4g63 and 4g64 are basically pretty similar of one another.

I just want to use a SOHC head. It's free and I just think its cool. I'm not trying to build a race car.

No this motor didn't come from a Hyundai. I didn't want to say what it came out of until I got pictures of the car, because some people think that its hilarious. It came out of my beater that my grandma gave to me. I drove it for about a month until the tranny went out. Its a bahama blue 1992 Plymouth Colt Vista SE. Some people think its ugly and funny that I drive it, but to me its pimpin and I love it, its great!

The Colt is the hottness!

I would strongly advise against the 4g63 rods. I just can't see how the rods from a 4g63 would work in a 4g64.

They have different cranks, they aren't to different but they are different enough, meaning the stroke of the rod and piston is going to be different on that of a 4g63 than a 4g64. I just can't see that working.

Not to doubt your source. But the difference is enough that I would go with 4g64 rods if I was building the motor.

Yeah, I see what your saying. Im not exactly sure what route I'm going with yet. Right now I am just trying to get together a basic plan of attack.
