The people over at the srt forum are trying to tell me that autometer are "crap" gauges so I want to know your guy's opnions. I'm talking best bang for the buck also. I'm thinking autometer cobalts boost and electric oil press.

My boost gauge was autometer, and worked just like it should have. I am sure Greddy works great too, but pricewise....autometer FTW

I'm looking to spend no more than $300 for an electric oil press and boost for the record

I voted Autometer too. Some people talk shit, but realistically just about every aftermarket guage I have seen in a street car has been an autometer and 99% of the guages I have seen in the dirt track racers have been autometer. Theres one brand that has a pretty universal approval, I think its the guys name, but damn they are expensive. I would (and am) going to go autometer.

Why go electric?

blk_srt

mechanical boost and electric oil because I didnt like the fact that when I was driving the talon I had 75+psi of hot oil running to a guage a foot away from my face and electric is easier to install

Autometer is the best bang for the buck and has the best quality too.

which series do you guys like the best. I'm thinking cobalt because I like black faces with led lighting. Whatever I get I want led lighting but I either want black or silver faces.

Thor06

I like the white faced guages, but I got a cobalt one from the parts car so rather than look gay with a couple different series of guages I am just going to go with more cobalt ones.

I am running the Phantom series because they are inexpensive for the typical Autometer quality and they match my stock gauges very nicely.

I do like the Cobalt gauges too but they seemed a bit pricey when I last looked them up.

can't beat auto meter

on average the cobalt series is $10 more than the phantoms. I have all phantoms in the talon but want something a little more technology I guess you could say, basically I like the lighting

I had Defi's on the Spyder, with the brain-link thing. They were awesome, really high end stuff. I had boost, EGT and fuel pressure, and the brain unit. Each guage new on EBay is like $240, but I got everything $350 shipped from a guy parting out his car. I think quality-wise they are just amazing, but probably not the best bang for the buck...you can spend a lot less and get a lot more.

As for autometer, have you seen their Nexus series? That stuff looks top notch.

blk_srt

nexus' are nice but for $250 a guage plus $270 for the controler is a little to much for me

Holy crap... Those Nexus gauges are amazing!

would you guys go mechanical oil press or spend the extra on electric?

Thor06

I'd go mechanical pretty much because I am a cheap ass.

Autometer FTW....I have the Pro-Comp Ultra Lites for the Talon, and I must say they are some sweet gauges.

Electric. I've heard that mechanical oil pressure guages have the oil literally run right to the gauge. In case of gauge failure, you could have boiling hot oil squirt right onto you. In fact, a few shops around here simply refused to install one of the mechanical gauges I had, for the mentioned reasons.

Blackcrow64

I would go electric for any guages like that just for the pure reason of safety. Like Shpyder said, who wants boiling hot oil in their face. lol

If I get hot oil sprayed all over me, after a preif period of being horribly pissed off, I would say, "Damn I am glad I saved $200 over that electric." ;)

Realistically though, how many times have you heard of that happening?

I've seen a vid online of a golf mk iv (I think) burning to the ground because of it. This was a long time ago, so I don't know if I could find it again.

i think the autometer c2 gauges are awesome great lighting and very acurate but from what they say the nexus is the most acurate gauge on the market

I say go autometer just because the other gauges are pricey. I say just get some cheap acurate gauges. I hate the expensive flashy neon gauges...too ricer for me. I'm going probably with some autometer sport comps, just because they are simple, look good, and arent ricer-ish. I might go with megans...I'm undecided. As for the oil pressure gauge, I would go electric, the only gauge I would ever run mechanical is boost. The electric gauges arent expensive anyway.

Wait wait. At first I was like, oh damn that sucks. But seriously, that oil is hot enought to scald but theres no way hot oil could start a fire. All it would do is make a mess out of the interior, burn the hell out of the driver, and possibly cause excess wear in the engine but if hot oil started fires, an engine wouldnt last longer then the few minutes it takes to warm up. I just dont think that sounds right.

It does if the spark from the gauge ignites the oil... Come on, I've been drinking too and I figured that out. lol

From what I remember, I think like the whole line just exploded sending oil in the engine bay, and inside the cabin.

Ahhhh, I see. Yeah, a fire extinguisher is definately on the list. I am all for saving as much weight as possible, but I will definately have a decent sized fire extinguisher and mounted easily within arms reach, not none of this pop bottle sized shit mounted to the passenger side A pillar.

depends what the hot oil comes in contact with

metal vs. paper, etc

I had two autometer boost gauges loose their precision. I say defiD. I'll never buy autometer again

my boost gauge is off by about 2 PSI, i know that because when i shut the car off, the gauge is just below 0 on the vac side... SUCKS! is their a way to adjust it?

Hmmm, maybe you can open her up and adjust the needle just like a regular car gauge by popping it off and putting it back on so its perfect with the zero. Not exactly sure though. They might be a pain to open up and real fragile inside.

While its off, tap the front of the gauge and see if it goes back to zero... If so, it might be wore out or in need of recalibration... At least, I think you can recalibrate them...

its new... like less then 12 months old...
because my old ones where stolen... (bastereds!)
anyone know how to re-calibrate a mechanical boost gauge? think autometer will replace it? and tips?
