Well, I started this kit today by spray painting the exterior of the car. The model is really nice, no flash, great chrome. The tyres are top notch. I love the way that the wheels will tuck under, just like in the movie, at the flip of a switch and even comes with a stand for when you want to display it like that. And then you can just flip the switch, and it's back on it's wheels. Here are pictures:

The only problem is the going is slow as the instructions are in Japanese! Also, I'm going to be painting the taillights instead of using the decals. I think they'll look better that way.

This is a really nice kit. I have 3 or 4 of them. I just wish it were easier to de-time-machine them. :(

An old one I built looked pretty good w/ the decals under the taillights. :2cents:

I started working on this kit again, along with the Focus WRC I have, and I just finished all the steps needed to make the wheels flip. That was a lot of hard work, especially for a guy who has a wicked bad cold, and if I stayed around paint too long (or glue fumes, for that matter) my nose started running like crazy and my cough acted up. Pictures up later tonight!

look cool, great old kit, I've got an AMT issue to build ,I bought it few years ago, my plan is to do a superdetail version just after the part when old Biff goes to the past to give young Biff the almanac

I've always wanted to get one of those kits!
I loved those movies when they came out and they're still great today.

I was lucky enough to grab the kit on sale at a local 'mom and pop' hobby store in Middletown, CT called Amottos. It was 50% off when I got it! And if anybody need reference shots of the BttF DeLorean, I just got back from Universal Orlando and took plenty of pictures!

Oh yeah, I also started work on the interior today. I can only work for 15 to 20 minutes at a time before I start feeling really lightheaded... an effect of the cold I have right now :( I found out I don't have a green or blue for the car, so I'm gonna pick those up tomorrow afternoon, and then make more progress. The interior tub is complete, and the sides and seats need just a little bit of paint to cover the bare plastic where I was holding the pieces. Getting the dash, rear shelf, and accessories for the arm-rest done is my goal for tomorrow.

If you haven't done so yet, and are capable. I recommend getting the testors metalizers paint for the body. Really looks great when finished. Good luck on this.

Well, I'd first off like to thank blubaja for their advice about the Testor's Metalizers. I went out and got a rattlecan each of Stainless Steel and Sealer today, and am currently waiting for the body to dry so I can buff with paper towels.

Secondly, thanks to everybody for their kind comments. Coming to AF and clicking on your thread, expecting one or two replies, but actually seeing 5 or more really makes a guy feel good and helps motivate me to work harder on my kits. Therefore, I have an update, albeit without pictures. They will come later tonight, I promise!

So far, I've got the seats, e-brake and door panels glued onto the tub. The top and bottom of the dash are painted, complete with colored wires, which I achieved by using toothpicks and the steadiest hand I possibly could. There are a few offs, but overall, I'm really happy with how it came out. I'm about to go out to dinner with my family, so the body is going to dry while I eat, and I'll buff the body tonight while watching TV. All I need to do to finish the dash is finish the time circuits and put the decals on said circuits, as well as the dashboard. Then I just have a few gauges to attach to the glove-box and stick the alarm clock on top, and the entire dash complex will be done! Then I'll take pictures and post them up for you all to see. I'm glad I can build a kit that most people haven't seen a lot before :)

No prob man. Wear some gloves too when handling the body after painting. The metalizers paint tends to rub off on alot of things. Especially greasy fingers.

Well, the body has gotten 3 layers of the Metalizer... I would have stopped at two, but I nicked the body with my fingernails when I was buffing! Arg! The color looks GREAT when buffed, though.

I didn't get as far as I would have liked to on the body today, because the dash was a lot more complex than I expected, and I didn't get as much time to work as I planned. However, I think the work that I did came out rather well :-D Here are pictures!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/deltableh/Car%20Models/DeLorean/PICT2280.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/deltableh/Car%20Models/DeLorean/PICT2281.jpg

The instructions didn't call for the wires to be painted, but I decided to do that to add a little bit of color to a very boring gray dash. I also made an executive decision to paint the keypad on the center stack orange, to draw some attention to it. Finally, the decals on the center stack were the WORST! It's not that the decals themselves were bad, it's just they were three separate decals, and even though I thought I put enough time for each to dry, when I tried to put the second on, the first (top) one moved all over. Bit of a pain, but worth the results.

Thanks in advance for all the comments!

if i were you, before you get too far into it, sand down or otherwise remove any of the molded in wires and replace with real ones.

If you ever see this kit in person, you notice that all the molded-in wires both on the exterior and these in the interior, are all run along major countor lines. This can be liveable, if you're still building the movie car, and will cover those areas with other dressings...

When I started removing the cables that run along the fenders, I quickly realized I was in for quite a lot of resculpting to return the fenders to the proper shape.

Well, I don't have the patience or skill (in my opinion) to remove all the wires, not to mention I don't want to ruin this awesome kit, so I'm gonna leave the wires the way they are.

However, I do have pictures of the body:
Here's before buffing:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/deltableh/Car%20Models/DeLorean/PICT2282.jpg

And here's afterward!

The difference is hard to see in the pictures, but the stainless looks really good in real life. I'll seal it tonight, and then get on to painting the wires, and the logos, and all that jazz. I'm also hoping a little bit that the sealer brings out a little more shine.

well, I was mainly refering to the wires on the dashboard when i typed that.

also, the car has a stainless steel body and isn't really meant to shine (as in glossy paint shine).

Awesome work. . . Nice job with the metalizer. . .

I went the hard route with mine by coverin' it in BMF. . .PITA and no room for error but the finish was great. . .

Good luck with your build. . .:)

Any pics of that? Bet it looks great!

Nice work on this car. Brought back a lot of childhood memories about rich drug dealers who started their own car line, lol.

Great work Prof. Brown. Marty will be glad of the progress.

How difficult to convert the time machine to a street version in your opinion?

Thanks

Well, an update, as I can't manage to stick with one build for too long right now, but I think I'm really getting into this one for a bit. Here's some work I've done tonight, based on some pictures I took in Universal Studios

I did some work this afternoon. I actually used the movie for a little bit of reference, especially with the interior elements. This time, I included a standard US quarter to show you just how small some of the elements are.
