hey, whats up everyone?.. once again im here to get some help in my future project... here is the situation:
My friend has a JDM B16 on his car (89-91 I think) and a GSR on his garage.. he is taking the motor out to put the GSR block + the B16 head, to make a set up some ppl think is good... now, he is selling me the GSR head + B16 block for a cheap price.
I heard the set up he wants is good and with a lot of potential (GSR bottom + B16 Top) ... but what about GSR top and B16 Bottom?.. does it have potential, is it good to invest money on it?.. or should I just buy the GSR head and wait till I find a 1.8 block?
What do you guys think?

Sounds like a lot of work for no real improvements. There is a lot of controversy as to which head flows better. Overall, the GSR head should increase compression a tiny bit, but not enough to make a difference, and both heads have been flow tested to show almost identical flow ratings. The type-r head flows a little better because of the components, but it is the same as a b16 head minus those components. The guy you are getting this stuff from is not very bright. Honda put the motors together the way they did for a reason. And with all the money that Honda has to test everything, would you really think it to be smart to change it. Just forget all of this and either get a stock already assembled GSR motor, B16, or get the GSR head from your friend and buy an LS b18 bottom end to make an LS/Vtec. The LS/Vtec is an awsome motor, but make sure someone puts it together who really knows what they are doing. The only real reason for an LS/Vtec is they can be done cheaper than a GSR motor. Blocks are like $300-$400 and a B16 or GSR head can be picked up for around $800. For $1,200 you get a motor that makes Type-r power.

unless your friend is going to put some b16 pistons in the gsr block and a 2 layer head gasket, then, i would see it as a pointless poor mans type r conversion. otherwise, your friend is lowering the comp.
as far as your project goes. the gsr head on the b16 block is going to be slower than if you had the gsr block. you are still running on the torqueless wonder of the b16 bottom block. i would suspect it to be the same as pretty closely identical to a regular b16 longblock.
as far as your friend goes, id tell him, keep the b18c1 head. the gsr head flows better contrary to what he may believe ;)

Thanks guys... I found the light with your guidence. I was afraid of the LS\Vtec because a lot of people (haters) used to tell me how much they break down on you... Machine shop I tought was expensive and LS blocks are $$$ to build.... but guess what? A little research made me change my mind. This is how things gonna go down for winter project:
*96 LS block (no pistons) = $free 99.. from one friend of mine.
*Type R pistons (new rings, bearings) = $250 asambled
*Shaved and Taped for LS/Vtec GSR head = $100 at local machine shop
Well, everything its looking rigth.. hopefully it will be out for Spring... thanks again for all your help, any recomendations are welcome....

itr pistons = shaving the rods. dont forget to shot peen after the resizing.
ctr pistons are good.
p30s = less money to spend, cause less work, and more comp is gained for all motor.
plenty of setups to chosse from, choose your death.
let me add to your setup.
thrust washers
fittings to run the oil lines externally
arp bolts
NEW oil filter, NEW oil return gasket, NEW rear main seal, NEW head gasket, NEW oil pan gasket, NEW main bearings, NEW rods, NEW vtec oil pump, NEW vtec timing belt, and NEW vtec water pump. make sure the water pump and timing belt match up, or else, you will regret it :evillol:
if i forgot something, please add.

oh and also, balance the whole entire rotating assembly.

well, if you built it with just that............or....................like this

then, the haters would be right after all....................wouldnt they ;)
