resin SR20DET!!

now that I have your attention, I'm building the venerable SR20DET, and am trying to set a price on it so I can produce, and sell them to all of you that so desire it.
I'm thinking $20 for the basic engine, and manifolds. as I get parts done, eventually I'll have a complete engine bay for the tamiya S13 silvia k's/180SX. the complete engine bay would likely be pretty pricey, but that's way off right now.
so now that's on the table, let's discuss. give me your opinions as to how much you'd be willing to spend not how much you'd like to get it for (because that wouldn't be worth my while), what specific details are more important than others, and weather you'd be SERIOUS about getting one/some.

Dunno if you'd get many orders, seeing as Aoshima (?) just released a full detail S13... And seeing as in the end the engine/bay would cost about as much if not more than the kit, I think people would tend to go for the kit instead... just my :2cents:

well after seeing the aoshima kit that has the cube with the SR20 valve cover on it, and the fact that it's one of the "top half" engines as well, I think it would sell because
A:it's a complete motor, and
B:it can be swapped into ANY kit you want as easily as just building motor mounts, and glueing it in.

$20 is a little steep....especially if it's just for the engine and manifolds. I think around $12 would be more reasonable, and like $16 tops for the complete engine bay. That's just my opinion, though.

need some reference pics? lemme know heres mine http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/streetphase/bay.jpg
I would be interested in a resin engine, and also agree for about $12 I would get it.
my vote is dont make the spark plug cover on the valve cover, so people can add spark plug wires for added detail

thank you for your offer, I'll let you know if I need some pics. and it just so happens that I have already completed the valve cover (less the lettering) and indeed it is optional to put the center cover over the plugs/coil packs.
when I say just the engine and manifolds, I mean that it will have from valve cover to oil pan, and will have the alternator, starter (maybe), power steering, A/C pump, belts & pullies. the only thing you'll have to do is get a turbo and run your intercooler pipes and intercooler.
when I say full engine bay, this will include all bottles, core support, battery, power steering resevoirs, cruise control mechanism, brake/clutch master cylinders, fire wall, (plus the full engine as stated above) and if I can source some wires, maybe even pluming supplies.
I'll be working on this pretty dilligently, so I'll resurrect my progress thread and post up some pics to let you guys see that it's not going to be a block with a valve cover. I'm building this to as close to the real thing as possible. I want you to be extremely satisfied with the finished product, with very little if any modifications to replicate the real one.
now here are the next big questions. do you want top or bottom mount manifold? or should I make it so you can just flip it over (center mount)? What intake manifold would you like. I'm thinking something along the greddy "football" type because aoshima already has a pretty nice intake manifold, I must admit, though mine would be better.
thank you all for your input, it IS helping me with some descission making, and what not.

$20 is not a lot of money.
don't sell your product short.
check out how much other resin producers are selling engine kits for (around $30 i think) and what they include to judge how much yours should be.

$20 seems reasonable, if not cheap, for the amount of detail parts you're planning to put in. :D

thank you very much, that's the incentive I need there. I shouldn't have them for more than about $20. plus as small a box they will need, shipping would be mad cheap, which I'd probably have a set rate for U.S. folks, and actual for overseas.

I agree, it's not an exorbitant amount of money. I sell Aoshima's RB20DET:
http://www.tigersdenhobbies.com/store/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16284&category_id=254
For the same cost ($20.99 cdn or like $18 usd). Of course mine's based on manufacturer's suggested retail price though.
If you're looking for a retailer to maybe sell your engine kit in greater numbers, let me know :smokin:

is that RB20 a ful motor, or is that the "top half" as well?

If it's the same as the Aoshima RB26DET that I have, it's a top half with the front engine bay "tub" included.

$20 is totally reasonable. Suppose you have a sucky job that pays you only $5 per hour, and you have to work 4 hours to make $20. But you can't scratchbuild an engine in just 4 hours!
rsxse240
11-22-2006, 09:46 PM
no, actually I have a very good job that pays about $16/hour, and I still can't afford to build my real cars. now that's frustration if I've ever known it. besides, extra money never hurts.

Sounds like it WOULD be a bit more than the Aoshima piece, and worth $20 at that. My apologies :owned: Good luck

If it's any good, I'll definately buy several! For $20, that's not such a bad deal, especialy for a subject manner that has largely been ignored by kit manufacterers.

cool, I'll start out at $20/engine then. hopefully I'll be able to make enough off of it to be able to afford to get on to building other motors too, like full detail RB20, RB25, CA18, and even some front driver variations of the more popular import motors.
well I'm not getting anything done being on here!! haha

Fascinating logic.
:icon16:
Actually it does make sense. Kind of the same but different, years ago I wanted to buy a $250 chassis for my R/C truck, but I could have basically made the same thing for $60-70 in materials and a some of my time. If I was making more money at the time, I would have taken the quicker route and just bought that one, because it would take me about the same amount of time to save up as it did to cut and drill and fit and re-fit.
This is a lot harder to scratch-build, but you do have to temper the cost versus the desire: While people might really want the full engine for their project, if it's too much they just won't buy it.
Look at what it's going to cost you to produce each complete engine package, including the materials, the packaging, etc, and then set your price from there. At this point in time the design/build time is a wash, but companies making parts for a living have to factor that in too.

i think this will really depend on the quality and accuracy of the finished product. if it's well detailed and good overall, people will be more willing to pay more for it.
i'm not going to say much more until i've seen the fruits of your labour.

I'm a bit fruity! heheeee!
here's my progress so far. I had to re do the valve cover completely, something about heat and plastic, I don't know. the head is about 2/3 done. just recieved all of the detail images for the rest of the motor, so, barring all "honey do's" I should be able to have these out by christmas...yeah right. my real goal is to have them ready for sale NO LATER than march, when I'll have them at the MCMA anual model contest in Irving, Texas.
sorry if the photos aren't perfect, but it's the best I can get. I tried to take some out door pics, but the sun washed out all of the detail onthe white plastic.

John, I'm not discouraged one bit. if that low detail, top half only RB motor cost $15, then I should charge about $40 because mine will look pretty good, and be the entire motor!! hahaha
