97 Ls getting loose

hey

I've searched the threads and have not found many specifics on this have a 97 Ls 4x4 135K runs nice. I need to replace the pitman it is time I've done every repair posted for a 97 except my pitman and was wondering how to tackle this one. Does the steering box have to come out of the truck? What is a rag joint and should I replace it since the thing is apart? and finally this adjustment screw on the steering box how do I adjust the thing. I read all the other posts, but still have these questions before I tear into the rig. Love this truck just need to tighten up the front end. Thanks

You will have to get a pitman arm puller to properly remove it.

I wouldn;t do it at hom, it looked to be a little bit of a chore when I saw the shop do mine.

Don't overlook the idler arm while you're under there. They seem to take as much of a beating as the Pitman and gearbox.

You need a pitman arm puller, and the repair can be done on the vehicle.

There are two types of "rag joints" in these vehicles. One is the old style flexible "doughnut" and the other is the close-coupled constant velocity type. Another item which can wear and cause play in the steering is the telescoping shaft.

As for adjusting the sector gear preload on the steering gearbox, the proper metod is to disconnect the steering shaft, connect an in/ounce torque wrench, and adjust the preload to a specified minimum breakaway torque. It is very easy to overload the adjustment while trying to take out play, and this can eventually destroy the box.
