Will not stay running...

I have a 00' Grand Am, just wouldn't start one day when I shut it off.

I checked and replaced the fuel relay and then it would start and idle BUT once you touch the gas, it dies... So, I'm thinking fuel filter, so disconnected at fuel filter.

So, here's the question, when I turn on the key and it pumps for about 2 seconds, thats normal when starting to built pressure right? So, if it is unhooked and can't build up pressure. Should the pump keep pumping until you turn off key OR should the pump turn off ofter 2 seconds?????

The pump will run continuosly if the fuel line is disconnect.

With it hooked up the fuel pressure regulator is what stops the pump when pressure is achieved.

actually I think the pump is set to run 15 - 30 seconds with the key turned to the on position, then shuts off if the car isn't started ... the pressure regulator just allows anything over the required pressure to flow back to the tank thru the return gas line. The fuel pressure regulator doesn't have any electronics to tell the pump when to shut off, its kinda like a radiator cap, once too much pressure builds up it opens to keep things from breaking. So when you disconnect the fuel filter it should spew gas for a little while then shut off.

Thier is not a set time for it to run.

The fuel pressure regulator only maintains the fuel pressure, then what isnt used gets sent back to the tank.

The FP relay is what shuts off the pump if the PCM doesnt sense a voltage from the camshaft position sensor or cranksahft position sensor. ie not turning over.

But when the lines disconnected it'll pump out for some time before the pcm kills it. Thats why it recomended that you disconnect the FP wire harness or pull the fuse when you change the fuel filter.

am I missing something here, I dont usually toggle the key while I have the fuel line disconnected to change a filter..unless I wanna see if the pump is pumping but a gauge can tell me that without taking anything apart.
