Riveting Advice!

Hi Guys,

A question for them that know and use in 1/20 and 1/12 scales. Do you fit the after market rivets and spray them in position, or do you spray them and then fit them after the item has been sprayed?? I guess it really depends on whether they are on bodywork - in which case they'd surely be sprayed at the same time as the body? Whereas with rivets on say a bodytub, they'd be more likely to be a slightly different colour as they'd have been attached at the time of building?

1/20 Lotus 25 & 1/12 Ferrari 165 to be started

1/24 Lancia 037 and 1/9 Ducati currently on the bench!

When I attach after market rivets I look at ref pics to see the color they are supposed to be. If they are in the same color as the part to be mounted on I install them at once. On my bikes I mostly use aluminum rivets when they are to stay that way. BUT, if the rivet is to be a different color than both mentioned above I'd suggest you slide the rivet (if it is the pin type) into position half way, then paint and then pull it all the way in from the back. If it is the dot type I'd suggest you pre paint them.

Hi Joel,

The one's I ordered are all pin types as far as I know - got them from scale hardware. Just waiting for them to turn up. I guess the trouble I'm going to have is getting colour shots of the Sharknose under the bodywork to see if the rivets are the same colour or slightly different.

Darren, that was me. Click on the link to the 312T3 and you can see the progress. I installed the rivets before painting because glitter is way too bright! The other reason I did it that way was because the glitter was glued onto the surface. The rivets you will be using will go into pre-drilled holes which should be drilled before painting.

Thanks for coming back to me and my apologies for the delay in coming back to you. Yes, your absolutely stunning Ferrari F1 build was was I saw the use of glitter, and I will be drilling and fitting the rivets I got from Scale Hardware - now received - before painting as per your advice.

On another note - is there any update on the accessory 'kits' you were looking at producing?

Yep! I've already turned two sets of rear wheels and completed the resin inserts. Now I need to make the working wheel nuts and hubs then I'll start on the front wheels.

Darren, I have never heard of Scale Hardware before and I am intrigued.
