So, I was thinking of trading my Porsche for a BMW. I was thinking maybe the E36 or Z3. After checking out www.crashtests.com , I found out that BMW's actually did poorly in crash tests. See here:

EURO CRASH TEST (http://www.euroncap.com/details.php3?id=bmw_3series_1997)

CRASHTESTS.COM (http://www.crashtest.com/bmw/ie.htm)

As you can see, the EURO car did poorly, while the American model did the opposite. This is very confusing, were the EURO 3 series cars made out of less metal or something? Why did they do so poorly compared to the american 3 series? What does the american 3 series have that the euro doesn't?

Yeah your right the car did do bad in the test but you gotta admit that the car looks damn sexy for a four door saloon , I mean it has the same good looks and styling of a sports car and its in the executive class so people are still gonna buy them thats all i have to say on the subject,
but i respect the point you are making, dont take offence to the smilie i just think it looks cool thats all:flipa:

Very interessting point you share with us, thx ! I must admit that i have NEVER EVER chosen a car becourse of the safety-related topics (hmmm.....i have trust in my luck ;-)

As far as i know do you guys "over there" have limit-restrictions even on your highways, havenīt you ? Here in Germany itīs still so that you are allowed to drive as fast as you like on the highways (I hope that this will be so for the next many years *g*). I have been in many discussions about cars/engines/horsepower and so on (Like probably everyone has) but there has never been talking about the safety (Iīm a little bit wondering). Maybe itīs becourse a BMW itīs known as a sportscar (As Porsche also is), and sportsmen donīt really care abot safety (Sorry, īwas a joke !). I think itīs a interessting page youīve posted (And i saved it as a favorite to read it more seriously later on). Maybe you know this "wise words": In theory praxis is like theory, but in praxis itīs not !....and itīs the same thing with all these crash-tests. The engineerers want to make tests which can be reproduced in the exactly same way under exactly same condition every time, and i think thatīs simply impossible (Compare with the more common "Chaos-Theory").

Wow, here in Germay itīs still marvelous weather, īthink i go out for a little ride ;-)

Hey, Noone ever responds on these forums so I thought if I said "BMWs arent safe" I'll get some attention;) What confuses me is if you go to Crashtests.com, the BMW E36 actually did well in the american front crash test. Then you look at the EURO front crash test and it did poorly. It's as if you guys in EUROPE got totaly different chassis or something.

The BMW 3 series is my favorite car. I took a ride in my friend's 330, and HOLY CRAP! I used to be one of them "AMERICAN MUSCLE, IMPORTS SUCK" kind of people untill I took a ride in that 330. No american car I know will compare, and that's BMW's Cheapest car!! My favorites are the 540s, but I can't afford those.

I have a Consumer reports magazine that tested reliability. It gave the E36 high marks, but once the redesign came, it got average. This is why I'm looking at the E36. I also like the E36 M3 and I saw a 95 for 18000. I was hopeing 15000, but it will be hard finding an M3 for that price. Maybe I'll get a 328is because it's almost as quick. I saw some guy selling an M3 for 13,000 but it needs a new head. Does anyone know what kind of repair bill I could be looking at?

The difference in results between the American and European tests is not so much due to the cars being different but due to the tests being significantly different.

The US NCAP tests are conducted using a FULL frontal impact with a solid wall, whereas the European test is an OFFSET frontal impact against a deformable barrier face.

See these links for more info.

I dont know how different the ones your talking about would be from the one i had experience with, but i got T-boned by a gigantic school bus on keighn ave in the middle of Camden NJ. I was sitting on the passenger side(directly where the point of impact was) the car had no airbags and i wasnt wearing a seatbelt and I managed to walk away with some bruises. the car completely spun around flattened all four tires knocked over a traffic light and was totalled beyond repair. the dash was outside the car and coolant was flowing into the passenger compartment i had to crawl out the driverside and an onlooker pulled me out. when the ambulance got there they refused to believe i was in the passenger side. of course though, that was one of the older BMW's somewhere from 87 - 91 and im a big mofo.

In the end I was aight.

Damn them busses hit hard:biggrin2:

"BMWs RULE"

amen

I found a 97 bmw for 15,900 with 60k miles, nice color and that seems like a sweet deal. The add didn't say much, just "runs great" and some basic stuff. It was a newspaper add so they can't get too decriptive. I'm definetly going to sell the 1969 911T and that will get me halfway to the 97 M3. I'll borrow the other half from my dad, it shouldn't be too hard to pay back 7,000:D I decided to go 97 over 95 because the 95 had a 2.9L, even though the 3.2L engine in the 97 has the same horses, it's got 11 more torque, and it get's the power quicker. This is what edmunds is telling me, and we all know how accurate edmunds is when it comes to specs:rolleyes: 97 also had some imporved safety features, and I think the seats looked nicer. (that wierd head rest that kind of makes the seats look like recaros)
