First place I would start looking, is to determine what's missing preventing the engine from turning over. Do you have fuel making it to the cylinders, and do you have spark? You can spray starting fluid into the engine to kill two birds with one stone, if it starts with the starting fluid, you can be certain that it's a fuel delivery problem. Make sure the timing belt is intact as well.

On my 89 I am thinking I have an intermittent electrical problem. Thanksgiving morning it would not start to come home from the grocery store. It was getting spark but fuel was not pumping in the line. While the fuel filter was off I was going to replace it on Friday in the parking lot. Friday before replacing the filter the line started pumping fuel. It could be related to my turn indicator lights they are intermittent now they work when they feel like it. If the filter is removed are you getting gas to pump out of the line while trying to start ?
