Well, I'm not absolutely certain on this.. But I'm pretty sure that your computer can't be tuned. Instead, it requires a chip to be made to replace your stock chip. It's a little more tedious and involved than most newer cars where you can just go in and change the settings. As for the EGR, you can't ever "delete" it per say, but you can change the settings to where it will never turn on. Kind of like telling it to only turn on at 8K rpm's, rather than being on at normal rpm's and only going off at WOT.

You should really check out TunerPro (http://tunerpro.markmansur.com/). It's completely free to download, and should support your car. I believe you would have to buy the materials that you would need to burn your own chips (I'd suggest Moates.net (http://www.moates.net/)). They can get a little pricey though.

But again, I'm not an expert with this stuff. I'm still learning it all myself, the most I can do is point you in the right direction.

you can too have egr deleted from the ecm program. TGO has the best forum for prom burning and tuning, here's a direct link...

Hmm.. must have been thinking of something then :dunno:

EDIT: Heh, I was thinking of the speed govenor... and how you would have to raise it to like 200 mph, since you can't delete it.

With winaldl you can datalog numerous different things, mainly Block Learn Memory, Error codes, and spark knock. Also, with TunerPro you can change anything you want to in you .bin file. The main tables you would use would be your fuel trim tables and spark tables, but you can also adjust the temp for you fans to come on, EGR, speed limiter, target idle RPM, Performance Enrichment mode, target AFR, and target WOT AFR along with many many other variables. Best thing starting out is to check out TGO's DIY-PROM board for the basics because they are the BEST of the BEST when it comes to tuning third-gen f-bodies, but they can get very technical very fast so if you have questions you don't want to ask there just ask here and I'll help you out best I can because I have spent many hours messing with this software.

Win ALDL isn't a good choice for data logging since it communicates at only 160 Baud. Your ECM is capable of 8192 Baud. the difference is how much data you will get in a given time so it gives you a finer flow of data.
What all you'll need is: A PROM programmer (I bought one for $80), a scanning program (using Moates' ECM 851...FREE), editing software (I use Winbin...FREE), a cable to go from the ALDL to the laptop (made my own for about $4) And you'll need a blank PROM chip and an adaptor. Moates.net has these. $7 for the chips and around $40 for the adaptor.
With all of this you can turn off the EGR operation and you can turn off the check engine light for EGR. Actually removing EGR would require decompiling the binary code, finding the info for EGR, removing it and then recompiling the code (and hope all went well).

damn is it the 89 that cany be tuned...i thought it was 93-95 or 96. i know when i had the 96rs i had to get a 97 pcm so i could do a custom tune

Any car that has FI can be tuned, just some are harder to tune than others, like the 8746 and it's one data point per like 1.2 seconds

Depending on the age of the laptop you would be dataloging with, you might have to buy a USB-Serial adapter to help interface the ALDL stream with the USB. If you have a 9 male pin RS-232 port then your good to go, but if not go by radio shack, their adapter worked the best for me.

Moates just revamped his site a little while ago and changed some of his products and their prices and I think you should come in a little under Morley's quotes. They also don't make the at29c256 chip anymore, but they have the 512 replacement chip which is sounds like it only works with motes flash-n-burn hardware.

Yes, as long as you have the hardware mentioned. The older ECMs aren't like the newer PCMs, you can't just have the cable and the programs and flash the PCM, you have to take out the chip, erase it, burn the new .bin, and then put it back in the computer.

There are no cut and dried changes you'd need to make. Each engine combo is different and no 2 tunes are the same. With a scanning program you'll be able to see how your engine is running on the stock ,bin file (program on the PROM). From the data logs you'll have to determine what needs to be changed, how much and which way (up/down). You could start with a stock GM bin like I did (ARAP) and go from there or you could pay someone like PCM for Less to burn you a .bin and then you'd send them data logs so they can fine tune the .bin to what you need. Personally, I like learning and doing for myself. If I decide to change my setup, I can just data log and further edit my .bin and burn it to a chip and see how it did.
