86 Fox body hatch question?

I have an 86 LX, and whenver i close the rear hatch, it dosent latch all the way or something. you can pull up on it and it will pop right open. is there a way to adjust the striker or is the locking mechanism screwed up in it, i know those go bad from time to time. any help would be great, thanks.

It may be the same as my 1987. The striker itself should have a plastic (nylon?) sleeve around it. Mine had been broken and cracked and was not there at all. The lock itself basically only clamps so tight, so if it is clamping around a 'bare' striker....the hatch will just lift right up as you have seen. That sleeve makes for a tighter 'clamp' around the striker. If so, you'll need to probably look on e-bay or get it from Ford. I had no luck at the junkyards as these 'sleeves' being broken is a common occurence. Good luck.
