Removal of Exhaust Flange Gasket

I have a 2002 Pontiac Montana. I am need to replace the exhaust flange gasket. When I unbolt the exhaust flange, nothing comes out. Does the gasket set in an indention that I need to pry it from? Can't see because of where the flange is, so I need to know what to feel for?
