recently obtained a 94 passport lx 4x4 3.2 tackled the timing belt job now its the rear axle bearing and most likely the shaft judging by the noise it makes my question is what size rear is on this vehicle? ive noticed on auto parts sites theirs two listings for bearings coned or sealed? basically i need to replace the rear wheel bearing and axle shaft just dont know what the rear is dana44? any help is appreciated.

ramblin thanks for replying. whats the difference between the chevy 10 bolt and dana44? does the dana also have 10 bolts? is their a way to tell by looking at it?

I didnt think isuzu used GM axles. I think it was an isuzu 10 bolt.
Easy way to tell the isuzu axle from the d44 is to look at the back of it. If it has a removable cover its a d44, if it doesnt its either an isuzu 10 bolt or 12 bolt (dunno if they used 12 bolts on rodeos).

Both my Rodeo's had removable covers - towed the boat a lot with both, fluid got changed quite a bit.
Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that '91 had the GM-10 bolt, had a GM 3.1L Chevy engine too - not that that has anything to do with, just thought it was funny back then to have an "Isuzu" with a GM engine, drivetrain, and rear-end.
I know for certainty, without a doubt, my '97 has the Dana44.
What they used between those years, was a combination of the two, I'm sure - BUT, I don't know what years got what.

I tried just a paper gasket and it leaked. Any paper gasket for a D44 will fit, but the surface of the diff isnt very smooth so the paper one wont seal well. This time I used a paper gasket with a light coat of old school red RTV on it and seems to be holding well. Any of the Permatex Ultra RTVs should work just fine without the paper gasket. I'm hoping that the paper one helps it come apart easier next time, but I dont know.

I use straight black Permatex RTV. The red has worked just as well for me, too.
