Fly's back! - Lancia 037 Stradale

Well its been a while! I've had a model hiatus for some months due to a couple of life changes - it happens! Now I have my own pad and own space, I'm able to get down to some model making again.
With our club stand taking on the 'Forza Italia' theme at this years nationals, I was inspired to conjure up something new for the event. To begin with I was simply going to build something to add to the display. But me being me and hardly ever able to build something straight out of the box, I went ahead with producing a new transkit to add to the Scale Auto Style line up.
Stupidly I got my dates mixed up for the nationals so I was unable to complete the display model in time but this is the progress so far. I now hope to finish it time for the Model of the Year Comp.
Appologies for the quality of the pics, I think I must have screwed up the compression when I resized.
THE SUBJECT
The Lancia 037 Stradale built for homologation purposes for the Group B rally car. The basis of this conversion is obviously the excellent Hasegawa kit.

REAR
The Stradale version was available with or without the huge rear wing. I prefer the contrast the car has without the wing compared to its rally counterpart. Surgery performed with the aid of a fine tooth razor saw.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/Lancia%20037%20Stradale/2006_1030_214249AA.jpg
Slight mods to the rear bumper - Number plate recess reworked and Hasegawa's error with the width of the spatz corrected.

After

Scratch built the housing for the light clusters on the rear cowl.

For the rear grille, I used strips of aerofoil shaped styrene used by airplane modelers. These needed to be cut in half length ways (not easy when they are about 3mm wide). The strips were then set between spacers made from sheet styrene.

The front headlight assembly is very similar to the Lancia Delta, so I looked to Hasegawa's 1/24 kit of such for donar parts. I cast copies of the Delta part in resin (not pictured) to use the headlight housing ends only.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/Lancia%20037%20Stradale/2006_1031_172238AA.jpg

The Lancia front grille which was carefully removed from the original kit part is alot narrower on the rally car so it was widened accordingly. The delicat part was then duplicated in resin.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/Lancia%20037%20Stradale/2006_1031_173544AA.jpghttp://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/Lancia%20037%20Stradale/2006_1031_173624AA.jpghttp://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/scaleautostyle/Lancia%20037%20Stradale/2006_1101_223923AA.jpg
The completed front clip. You can also see that vents were added to the lower bumper, again constructed as those previous. A lip was added along with the housing for the fog lamps and side repeaters.

INTERIOR
I'll let the pics do most of the talking here as I didn't take photos of the running progress. Obviously the road versions interior detracts greatly from the rally spec so the parts you see below are eithe scratch built of heavily modified from the kit parts. I have yet to make the seats though.

As it stands at the moment. Its now in primer ready to have on display at tomorrows show. Still plenty to do, most of the windows in the kit need modifying plus I have yet to make the master parts for all the lamps on the kit to be later cast in clear resin.

that is amazing! I am quite envious of your skills!
on a side note, I saw one of these cars driving down the interstate with a plethora of other lancias and was wondering what it was. however, it didn't have the wide body on it and I THINK the front end had flip up headlights, or something other than the squared off nose. It may not have even been a Stradale, but it looked VERY similar to the one in your pics.
so does this mean that S.A.S. is back in buisness? :ylsuper: :bananasmi :dunno:

Damnit.
Here I was going to buy a Hasegawa O37, do all the scratch-bashing to convert it, and impress the lot of you folks, and then Fly goes and brings us this.
I'm glad, too, because this is DEFINITELY a transkit I want. Great work, Fly.

WTF are you?!
Just kidding. Great start! No less to be expected from my scratch/bashing inspiration. Whether you're building or not, I look to your work and skill as something to strive for, and now that you're back, I better get my butt in gear! It's great to see you back, seriously, this is going to be an amazing model when you're done. Beautiful work replicating an awesome car. Thanks for sharing!

Glad to hear things are looking up for you.
Will follow this with interest - please keep updates as "encyclopedic" as possible ;)
Will you be making p/e rotors and your own suspension parts for this kit?

WELCOME BACK! So are you going to open up your shop again?
Scale Auto Style never went away, it just had a break!
I'll be producing kits to sell again, yes! My website is no longer running because I did not wish to continue with that particular host coz they sucked!!! I hope to get a new website up and running in the near future so I'm on the look out for someone who can put together a site for me *hint hint*. I shall be easing myself back into things with this new kit then I will continue to produce new items if all goes well. However, it is unlikely that you will see the majority of my back catalogue in production again anytime soon:frown: Some of the items will become OOP indefinately to make way for new products but, the remainder won't become available because many of the current molds are worn. To produce new molds will be both very costly and time consuming (two things I don't have much of at the moment - cash and time), so unless I find someone to do it for me they will be reintroduced gradually providing I get the support needed from the new products.
Many thanks for your comments, they are very encouraging, although if it weren't for the modellers on this forum I would not find the inspiration to build models.:bigthumb:

Wow, glad you got your "own space" to work again. I am about to lose my "own space" when the fiancee moves in soon. Oh well,...
How long did that take you to make the trans kit?

Breathtaking. Cannot wait till the next update, let alone when the transkit would be ready for sale. Wow.

This is trans kit I was waiting for, I was going to do it myself for number of times but didn't have guts to do it.
Nice to see you back Chris and when I saw Lancia, I was even more happy.
Great work on the body, by the way ;)

A little more progress on construction of the master parts. All are now complete for this transkit, the next stage will be to prepare them all for casting.
Seats
For the seats I opted to construct them in 3 sections, mainly for easy casting later on, but also because with this particulary design I felt a better look would be achieved if I did it that way.
For the seat, back support and headrest, I made a sort of 'buck' from styrene sheets of various thicknesses to provide a guide when shaping the putty. The putty was rolled out flat and and cut as required to fit the buck.

Side mirrors.
I took the side mirrors from the Delta kit as a basis for the 037's. Only the mirror section was retained and the new supports were made from laminated styrene. Shapes were dupliced several times over from 2 different thickness sheets then sandwiched together to achieve that ribbed effect.

It's always fascinating to watch someone with exstreme skills at work. I'm looking forward to seeing how you cast.
