My 94 Aerostar transfer case seems to have a lot of play in it. I can turn the forward shaftback and forth quite away before it stops. I have been getting a clunking when the vehicle dissengages from the four wheel drive mode. Can I repalce or fix the play in the case or do I need to replace the case?
Thanx Ken

Welcome to your first post on AF.
Yes it can be fixed but time and money and transmission/transfer case experience is required.
You might want to pull drain and filler plug and check chain slap first.
If only a clunk when disengage check all 4 tires for matched pairs.
Also back up a little before disengage.
See if that helps and post back results and if tires are all matched.

Hi:
Thanks for the reply to my problem. It was last winter when the clunking started and I had miss matched tires. Since then I have all new tires of the same size etc. There is not much snow yet but the little I did find I was able to spin tires and disengage with out the noise. I have not had time to check for chain slap and the backing up idea seems like a good interum solution.
