1986 Golf CL Gearbox problems

Hi
As the thread title would suggest i have a 1986 Golf CL. Yesterday I think the gear box died as it no longer changes to 5th gear (when i change up it just changes to third.) I asked some more mechanically minded friends of mine and they suggested a new gear box. Phoned some scrap dealers and none have a gear box for the model so i was wondering if a gearbox from any other age golf or any other model of volkswagen would fit (its a 1595cc engine). Also wondered if there's a possability that there's something else wrong with it that doesn't require changing the gearbox.

I found the problem. there is a plastic connecter from the linkage to the gear box which had snapped. cost me a whole pound for a new one!
