90 Cutlass Supreme Door Handle

11-16-2006, 03:31 PM
I just bought a 1990 Cutlass Supreme (4 door) and the outer drivers side door handle doesnt seem to be working unless you yank on it realllly hard and pull the door really hard. It seems the door handles are a common part to replace on these vehicles. So how do you do it?? Any advice for a newby?

I'm not 100% on those door handles, but the best advice I could give you is too go have a look at the handle from the outside and inside (remove door panel). A lot of times I've had to learn how to do things simply by going through a logic process. Logic tells us the handle is held on by screws or bolts, therfore look for screws or bolts.

Pretty straightforward removal for the door panel. Look for any and all screws retaining it to the door, after you have removed all of them, pry along the edges of the panel where it meets the door. Aside from screws, it's held in place by clips. Be careful not to break anything. Plastic breaks easily, even easier if its old.

could be just be the rods on the inside, if i remember correctly on the end of the rod, near the lock, there is a little plastic thing, you can turn it, and it'll make the rod longer, so less effort to open the door, its kind of a pain to get to it and make it all work

there's no point in replacing the handle...you'll keep getting the same problem. i had a new handle and within less than a year it was the same way...use some wd-40 or something....just dont waste the money
