I Have a 98 V6 Malibu with 130,000 miles. Just startinghavine problems starting in cold weather. When the Night temp falls to below 50 deg.f,the car won't start all the gauges work fuel pump works but there is nothing not even turning over but when i return home from work and the Temp has warmed up the car starts fine.Does this sound like the starter ?

Thanks
Bruce

Sounds more like a bad or weak battery.

Sorry to respond, but I had the same symptoms five months ago. The car was slow to turn over for a few months before that and then one day did not start at all. Tried jumping the battery with no luck. It was the starter. This was at 110,000 miles on a 98 LS.

I experienced a number of electrical problems with this car so don't forget to consider electrical connections between the battery and starter.

I had almost the exact symptoms you describe- turned out to be a loose battery cable.

I replaced my starter earlier this year but it was not engaging the flywheel so it'd just sit there and spin. Fairly simple to replace- just not the cheapest part on the car...

Thanks for all of your answers i did replace the starter .And as you might guess that was not the problem. What's giving me trouble is that it only happens in the morning when it's been at least in the 40's at night . The other day i was able to jiggle the key and got it to start . Now i do not know weather to replace the locking cylinder or the control module ? might try to find a complete unit at a junk yard first.

Thanks
Bruce

Update on problem i replaced the ignition cylinder and electrical module with one from a Junk yard .He would only sell as a complete unit so i just cleaned both parts with electrical cleaner an installed in car After about 15-20 min with the key left in the the acc.postion everything works fine.Of course the night temp was not cold as before. But a cold front is coming in this weekend so i will keep you posted on what happens. If this works it was a cheap fix at 50.00 . :grinyes:

That's a good possibility. I don't think temp has a large role to play with the ig switch - I still think its the battery.
