99 grand prix 3.8. This is what it does. runs fine, shifts fine. Drive for a while (or short ) time. Service engine light comes on and shifts like everything is falling out. Shut it off and restart service light still on shifts fine. Could be an hour or days the light stays on then goes off. Can be hours days or weeks before it happens again. any idea.

Welcome to AF.
Best thing to do is get it scanned with a odb-ii scan tool and see what DTCs are causing the SES to turn on. Post the codes. Also how many miles do you have?

the codes are as follows.p0742, 1811, 0102. 116,000 miles

the codes are as follows.p0742, 1811, 0102. 116,000 miles
P0742 is TCC (torque convertor clutch) stuck on. Possible TCC-PWM solenoid.
P1811 is Max Adapt Long Shift. Possible pressure control solenoid. <--Harsh shifting.
P0102 is the MAF sensor is generating a low frequency below the acceptable threshhold of around 1500 Hz.
When was the last tranny service - ATF and screen filter? Also, try disconnecting the 20 way connector at the top driver's side of the tranny and reseat.
For MAF try cleaning it (wire element) first with MAF spray cleaner and make sure there are no intake obstructions and the filter is clean.

(could this have to do with the long shift problem?)
P1811 is Max Adapt Long Shift. Possible pressure control solenoid. <--Harsh shifting. (they siad fluid was tarnished!)

The long shift problem is probably a PCS solenoid which can affect the TCC.
MAF is located on the top of the throttle body. Black square module above 2" X 2". Two Torx safety screws secure it. Just remove and undo the electrical connector.
If the ATF fluid is bad then it would be a good idea to replace it first.
Good luck.
