Exhaust Flange Gasket

I need to replace the exhaust flange gasket on my 2002 Pontiac Montana. Is there anything I should be aware of before I begin? The gasket the parts store sold me is made from some type of metal. I that normal? Do I have to remove the entire exhaust flange, or can I just loosen the two bolts, slide the old one out and slide the new one in?
