Timing chain cover gasket

When replacing the timing chain cover gasket do you use sealant on it? Just replaced the head gasket on my son 89 quad 4 and much to my surprise all went well except the center timing chain cover gasket leaks. When I put the new gaskets on I didn't use any sealant. The large outside gasket appears to be ok but the center one leaks rather badly from the top middle bolt. If you do use sealant do you use it on both sides of the gasket and what brand/type do you use.

Turns out that my leak wasn't coming from the timing cover but rather from one of the cam housing end gaskets that I put on backwards. This was the first time working on a quad 4 engine and I hope it's my last! It took me the better part of three days to tear this thing down and replace the head gasket. The job ended up costing around $500 as the cylinder head was warped so badly that it had to be replaced. God only know what a dealership or a garage, with their high labor cost, would charge for this. More than what the car was worth no doubt!

Yes it is a tough job especially if youve never dealt with the Quads before.
I was thinking you might of had one of the gaskets on wrong.

Ya a dealer would be about $1000-1500, I can usually do it for about $750-800 depending on what all was needing replaced.
