yes, you could put a vr4 (awd) tranny into an SL (fwd) car, but why would you want to? the AWD tranny has longer gears, and since you only have NA power (222hp), then you can't fully utilize the long gears. as a result, you're acceleration will go downhill (esp. in 3rd).

also, FWD trannies are much cheaper than the AWD trannies.

Fully agreed. Do a 5 speed swap but use a NA tranny. If things go as planned I will have a complete 5 speed swap for sale in a week or two. Keep an eye out for a thread.

They are trying to run up the cost. The ECUs are identical MTX to ATX

what about any 2nd gen. 3kgt trannys. would they be able to fit perfectly with all the parts listed on the faq page or would i still need the axles?

i answered this question in the thread on 3si where you posted as well. however, i'll answer it again.

91-92 trannies have smaller differentials. that is, the splines on the inner part of the axles that insert into the differential are smaller. 93+ trannies have larger differentials, or more splines on the inner part of the axles. the spline count on the outer part of the axles is the same for all years (27 splines). however, keep in mind that since the tranny is not in the center of the car, that we have unequal length axles. the passenger side axle is one piece (short side). the driver side axle is 2 pieces (long side). the inside piece on the driver side is called the intermediate shaft, and this is the part that changes. the driver side outer axle is the same for all years. the intermediate shaft differs on its inner spline count (25 for 91-91, 27 for 93+). the outer spline is on the intermediate shaft is the same for all years and inserts into the female end of the driver side outer axle.

so you don't need to get the corresponding year driver side axle, but rather just the corresponding year intermediate shaft. AND, you'll obviously need the corresponding year passenger side axle.

so 2nd gen trannies (93+) require 2G axles (translated 2G passenger side axle & 2G intermediate shaft). 1G trannies (91-92) require 1G axles.

[i know that's more information than what you probably wanted (spline count and all), but that's what i had to go through when i did a tranny swap for a friend. we knew there was a difference, but didn't know what exactly until we searched through CAPS and counted splines and called different auto part stores. we posted in a thread on 3si documenting everything. i'll try to find the link.]

as for the intermediate shaft, this is a hard part to track down. you can only buy them new from the dealer (charges ~$500) or from www.raxles.com ($150). the best place to find one is at a junkyard (less than $50).
