i have 2 12" jl subs and im planning to use the box spec suggested by jlaudio.com

but i have this small problem
the trunk of the sedan is tooooo small!
i measured the trunk of the sedan and its a couple of inches to small
for the suggested box

now im gonna mod. the box to make it fit

now my question is will it change the sound quality of the subs?
do you have any suggestions??

can you post some audio setup so i could take some ideas on what to do with my setup

thanks:)

well if you take off a few inches off the top, either replace the inches in the back, or on the sides of the box!! dont use FIBERGLASS To make a box, its not needed, just use 3/4 MDF!!!

if u make it sealed u'll get tighter bass & u can make the box smaller.

sealing the box makes it sound so much better!!!

are you sure? sealed is better?

OK.

-Sealed sounds better. That is just gospel.
-Ported is louder. This is also gospel.
-Bandpass sounds like ass unless you are a port-tuning god, which very few of us are, and not many people know what a tuned port should sound like.
-If you want more volume, go for a vented box, not sealed. If you get a SHOP to make you a good quality vented box SPECIFICALLY made for your subs you will get your money's worth.
-I garuntee that a medium quality sub in a high quality box specifically made for that sub will sound ten times better than the best sub in a shitty box.
-If you don't know what kind of airspace your sub requires, or are unsure about porting/venting size/diameter, then go to a SHOP! THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!

And what kind of JL subs are you putting in your car that the trunk is too small for? I can get my box for my 12" subs in my trunk fine, with plenty of clearance.

I don't mean to target anyone specifically with this post. I just had to deal with so many people who had the wrong idea about car audio last summer that i just start to rant.

But overall, if you aren't sure, go to a shop that sells the brand of sub you have. Trust me... they know what they are doing... that is why they charge so much. You can't put a price on a good ear and years of experience.

actually the laws of physics state that a ported box will provide more 'boom boom'. sorry to burst your bubble.

2 12"will give you more than enough boom boom right???
hehehehe

Yea, I had a thread about this a while ago cause I was wondering what to build.

Ported does go a little louder and has deeper bass but he is worried about space so i just suggested sealed which will save him room and create a quicker & tighter bass. It all depends on what u like and listen to. There r so many ways 2 make an enclosure it's not funny, just do some research & do what makes u happy.

Did we say it had lower bass?

Cliff notes

Nice bass response = sealed
Louder bass but shittier response = ported

My problem with ported boxes is that, sure, the bass is louder, but only at certain frequencies that are dependent upon the tuning of the port.

and depending on the sub, the box design, and the tuning of the ports, the pitches will be amplified exponentially louder than other pitches, increasing the shittiness of the bass.

personally i built my box out of 3/4 HDF (high density fiberboard) to completely eliminate resonance in the structure of the bass, so all you hear is the smooth bass coming from the actual sub itself, not the resonation of the structure.
