91 si

i have a 91 crx si & i need to know what the stock motor is & if it's even worth keeping. it only has 83k miles on it. what would be the best thing to add to my car, new motor (what type?) or just build on my current one? thx guys

You have an si, so it's the D16A6 engine. If you're not sure, check on the block, below the distributor, and it should be stamped into the block.

The Si is the best engine available in the USDM civics. it's 1.6 liter SOHC non-VTEC. The specs are :
108hp@6000rpm
100ft.lbs Torque

It's a really decent engine, and does really well with intake, header, and exhaust bolt-ons... Of course, there are better engines out there that you can swap in, but it depends on what you're after.

You could go with another D-series engine from the 92-95 civics (D16Z6), or from the 96-00 civics (D16Y8). Both are 1.6 liter SOHC VTEC.
The specs for both of these are pretty much identical:
125hp@6600rpm
106ft.lbs Torque

The cool thing about d-series engines is that they are all built very similar, so either of these engines will bolt onto your car without any modification, and you can use your existing tranny, axels, header, intake, etc.

The next engine up is the ZC engine. I believe it is from the JDM Si civics. It is also a 1.6 Liter engine, but is DOHC VTEC. The specs are:
135hp@6500rpm
108ft.lbs Torque
A few people on this forum have this engine, and seem to like them pretty well...

Then, you get into your B-series engines like the B16, B18, etc...
These engines are much more powerful, and are DOHC VTEC. The specs for the B16 are:
160hp@7600rpm
111ft.lbs Torque
This seems to be the most popular swap, and you may have read alot about it in Sport Compact Car, they're always swapping this engine into civics... It's alot more power, but it's more expensive. To do this swap, you need new axels, shift linkage, motor mounts, transmission, etc. A much more complicated engine swap, but worth it.

Personally, I have an Si engine, love it alot, but I'm swapping in a D16Y8 from a 98 civic EX. I found it at the local junk yard for $900, and its got less than 8000 miles on it. I could get one alot cheaper, but this was the one with the lowest milage. Anyways, considdering the fact that I'm not a mechanic, this swap will be alot easier for me to do on my own, and alot cheaper.

There are several other swaps that you can do H22, Frankenstien LS/VTEC, CRV/TEC, etc. But these are the most common.

The DOHC ZC is NOT VTEC. It's just DOHC.
