cannot get jeep to go into drive or reverse :(

1994 jeep wrangler 6 cyl automatic
seems it just stopped going - into drive or reverse
made a whirling sound and then just quit
doesn't sound good at all :(
any ideas?

Are you saying that the shifter will not go into D or R, or are you saying that when you put it in D or R, it doesnt move?
